Vincennes Historical Sites

This event begins with a short video tour of some of the fascinating historic sites of Vincennes, Indiana led by Richard Day, a local historian.  The video tour is followed by an interactive session with Frank Doughman, Chief Ranger of the George Rogers Clark National Memorial Park.  He will welcome any questions you have about historic Vincennes!

GEORGE ROGERS CLARK MEMORIAL
The memorial is located on the site of the former British Fort Sackville, which was captured by George Rogers Clark.  The fort was surrendered on February 25, 1779.  Open daily from 9a.m. to 5p.m., closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Day.  Admission is $2.00 age 17 and older, under 17, free.
 
BASILICA OF ST. FRANCIS XAVIER AND FRENCH AND INDIAN CEMETARY
The current "Old Cathedral" was built in 1826 and stands on the site of three previous churches.  Four bishops are buried in the crypt of the cathedral and the adjoining cemetary is the resting place of over 4,000 early Vincennes citizens.  Open daily 8a.m. to 4p.m. (self-guided tours), no tours during mass, but visitors are welcome to join the services.  Donations of $.50 for adults and $.25 for students are requested for tours.  Guided tours by arrangements, call 1-800-886-6443.
 
OLD CATHEDRAL LIBRARY AND MUSEUM
The largest library in Indiana containing ten thousand rare volumes dating back to 1319.  The museum contains displays of historic and church artifacts and books.  Guided tours by arrangement, call 1-800-886-6443.  Admission is $1.00 for adults and $.50 for children age 12 and under.
 
OLD FRENCH HOUSE AND INDIAN MUSEUM
Built in 1806 as the home of French fur trader and Indian interpreter Michel Brouillet.  The house sits in the center of what used to be Chippecoke, a Piankeshaw Indian village.  Hours are Memorial Day through Labor Day, Tuesday through Saturday 9a.m. to 12 (noon), 1p.m. to  5p.m., Sunday 1p.m. to 5p.m., closed Monday.  Groups and off-season tours call 1-800-886-6443. Admission is $1.00 for adults and $.50 for students.
 
GROUSELAND
The home of William Henry Harrison and his family from 1803-1812 while he served as the Governor of the Indiana Territory.  Hours are January through February 11a.m. to 4p.m., March through December 9a.m. to 5p.m. Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Day.  Admission is $3.00 for adults, $2.00 for high school and college students, $1.00 for students, and under age of 5 are free.
