    Credit by Examination
BGS students have two opportunities to receive course credit based upon previously acquired but undocumented knowledge. The first is through the College Level Examination Program (CLEP), a nationally recognized testing system that awards credit for passing 90-minute exams in specific subject areas. For more information on college credit through CLEP, visit or call the USI Counseling Center at 812/464-1867.

The second way to earn college credit for previous knowledge is through departmental exams at USI. Each school and academic department establishes guidelines for when and how coursework may be waived based upon a student's ability to demonstrate competency via exams, portfolios, etc. If you believe you may be able to qualify for credit via departmental exams please discuss your interest with your BGS advisor.

    Getting Admitted

USI's regular undergraduate admission requirements apply to the BGS program. For an admission packet and financial assistance information visit or call 812/464-1765 or 800/467-1965. Admission to the university must be completed prior to admission to the BGS program.

Visit for special information for transfer students.

The BGS committee meets formally to consider applications to the BGS program four times each year, in April, July, October, and December. Once you have been admitted to USI you are encouraged to begin working on core curriculum requirements while you complete admission requirements for the BGS.

    Distance Learning

Many USI courses are available through mediated formats including videotape, two-way television, and the Internet. Taking advantage of distance learning opportunities can help you save time and travel as you complete your degree. Visit for information about distance learning at USI and via the Indiana College Network, or call 812/465-1010 or 800/813-4238.
