PERSONAL COMPUTERS AND APPLICATIONS SOFTWARE CURRICULUM

GETTING STARTED WITH . .

These single-session courses are designed to introduce various computer applications. If you are considering purchasing software, if you are a beginning computer user and need a boost to get started, or if you are switching to new software and need to get off on the right foot with self-directed learning, these courses are right for you.


USING . . .

These courses vary in length according to topic and provide more in-depth experience with various operating systems and software packages. They are meant for those who need to develop proficiency in the use of specific applications.


FACILITIES

Noncredit computer courses are taught in microcomputer laboratories on the USI campus using the Windows operating system. Windows XP and Vista are used in the labs, but Windows 95, 98, 2000, ME, and NT users can also benefit from these courses.


CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION

All courses in this section carry continuing education hours for accountants and health care administrators.

 


COMPUTER COURSES FOR BEGINNERS

 

WELCOME TO WINDOWS 7                                                                                NO. CIS510
Learn the basic functions of Microsoft Windows 7 including using jump lists; working with libraries; working with search filters; using the taskbar; working with files and folders; personalizing the operating system; and working with
programs.

COMPUTER COURSES

 

CERTIFICATE IN COMPUTER PROFICIENCY                                                                               
A Certificate in Computer Proficiency has been developed to help individuals acquire and demonstrate a body of knowledge of popular computer programs. This 60-hour certificate provides participants with hands-on training in Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint as well as usage and benefits of the Internet. The Certificate requires these courses: Getting Started with and Using Windows, Getting Started with and Using Word, Getting Started With and Using Excel, Getting Started with and Using Access, any three-hour PowerPoint course and any three-hour Internet course. A proficiency examination is required upon completion of the course work. Those who believe they already have the skills and knowledge taught in some or all of the required A Getting Started with@ courses may sit for an exemption examination. The fee for the Certificate in Computer Proficiency is $100 plus the standard cost of each course. This fee covers registration in the certificate program, maintenance of personal files, and administration of the post tests. CERTIFICATE IN COMPUTER PROFICIENCY EXEMPTION TEST                                                  
Participants have the option of taking an exemption exam for the A “Getting Started” courses. The exam has four sections—Windows, Word, Excel, and Access. Students may select the sections they wish to attempt and will be exempt from “Getting Started” courses in the areas in which they pass the exemption test. There is a charge of $49 for one to four sections of the test. See testing dates below

CERTIFICATE IN COMPUTER PROFICIENCY POST TEST                                                             
Successful completion of the Certificate in Computer Proficiency requires participants to complete the required courses, as well as pass a general proficiency examination for each section. Participants are eligible to take the post test after they have completed each of the required courses. The fee for the post test is covered in the Certificate in Computer Proficiency Fee, however, participants do need to register at least one week before the scheduled test date.

COMPUTER TESTING                                                                                                                     
The Certificate in Computer Proficiency Exemption Test and the Proficiency Post Test will be held in the Continuing Education Computer Lab, University Center East, Room 2229. All participants must register no later than one week prior to the testing date. If you are unable to attend the dates listed call Outreach and Engagement at 812/464-1989 or 800/467-8600 to see if alternative arrangements can be made.

GETTING STARTED WITH POWERPOINT                                                                NO. CIS550
If you are a new Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 user, this course is for you. Topics include creating a presentation; using templates; adding text, graphics, and sound clips to the presentation; manipulating the order of the slides; printing the slides and handouts; and queing the presentation to play.

GETTING STARTED WITH EXCEL 2010                                                                    NO. CIS530
An introductory overview of Microsoft Excel 2010. Topics include creating and formatting spreadsheets; copying and moving data; saving and printing spreadsheets; totaling a data column or row; and sorting data. This course is designed for individuals with limited or no experience with Excel.

CLOUD COMPUTING                                                                                                 NO. CIS560
Have you ever been caught without a document you need? Cloud computing allows you to work, save, and collaborate as long as you have an Internet connection. Learn how to use different web-based applications to create documents, presentations, and save/share your work. We’ll explore Google Drive, Zoho Show, Dropbox, SkyDrive, Evernote, and more.
