What is expected, if I’m selected as a SPIRAL teacher?

Summer ’08:

· You will be paid $20/hour for all direct time spent with the project; substitute teachers will be provided (cost reimbursed to school corporation) for any school days you are expected to attend events associated with this grant. Approximate stipend for year one: $ 1340.

· You may enroll for three hours of graduate credit in the summer 2008 for participation in this opportunity, and another three hours in spring, 2009, if you so choose. You must pay your own tuition @ $228.95/graduate hour; Indiana residents = $686.85 total cost for three graduate credit hours taken during summer 2008. Tuition rates have not been set for the 2009 spring semester.

· You will participate in science content deepening experiences and observation of Model teachers teaching USI’s Super Summer morning science classes held at Tekoppel School, the week of June 16-20. The science curriculum is centered around FOSS modules and Indiana Standards. Activities last all day, including classroom observation from 9-11:30 a.m. and professional development with USI faculty and Model Teachers from 12:30- 3:30 p.m. Stipend for this week @ $20/hour for 27.5 hours = $ 550.

· You will participate in more science content deepening experiences and actually teach a few lessons, using FOSS kits, during the second week of Super Summer, which will be held July 14-18 at Castle Elementary School in Warrick County. The hours and daily schedule is the same as the June week. Stipend for this week @ $20/hour for 27.5 hours = $ 550.

’08-’09 Academic School Year:

· Two professional development opportunities, presented by Newbridge Educational Publishing Co. will be scheduled, one in the fall and one in the spring of the 2008-2009 academic year. (Read more about Newbridge on the Web at: http://www.newbridgeonline.com/c/@sbzEg21oX.2rU/Pages/about.html )

The fall workshop will occur during the school day and substitute teachers will be provided (school corporation will be reimbursed cost.) The spring conference will likely be scheduled on a Saturday, for ½ day, and all participating SPIRAL teachers will be compensated for their time @ $20/hour. Dates for both workshops will be announced to participants as soon as the events are scheduled.

· Four after-school professional development workshops (1.5 hours each) will be scheduled throughout the 2008-2009 school year to all participants to reflect on science teaching and learning. SPIRAL Teachers will be paid $20/hour for attending these workshops.

Other Information:

Because this is a federally funded grant, an assessment piece is mandated. Dr. Michael Slavkin, USI faculty member, has been contracted as the independent evaluator. Assessment components will be developed to determine the effect of the SPIRAL program—has teaching and learning science content improved? Both you and your students will be observed in your classrooms during the 2008-2009 school year and some pre-assessment and post-assessment may be involved. NONE of the evaluation information will be “attached” to you as an individual and can not affect your teaching position. Dr. Slavkin is gathering information to determine if this inquiry-based approach to teaching and learning science is benefitting both you and your students.
An online component will be developed in order for you to share information and resources with your SPIRAL colleagues, the Model Teachers and the USI faculty mentors. You will be expected to be an active participant of this online community.
As a participating SPIRAL teacher, you will have an opportunity to become one of the Model Teachers for year two of the grant, so that you can share your experiences and expertise with other teachers. Participation in year two is optional (and, if you agree, you are paid again!)
Up to twenty EVSC K-8 teachers and at least four Warrick County teachers will be selected to participate in this project as SPIRAL Teachers.
Teachers teaching in the following EVSC schools will be given priority enrollment as SPIRAL Teachers; however, other K-8 teachers are encouraged to apply, as space may be available. Teachers from all Warrick County Schools may apply. Spaces are limited:

SPIRAL teachers will be selected on or before Friday, May 23 and all applicants will be emailed a list of teachers chosen to participate. You must apply on or before noon, Wednesday, May 14, 2008.
