PERSONAL COMPUTERS AND
APPLICATIONS SOFTWARE CURRICULUM
GETTING STARTED WITH . . .
These single-session courses are designed to
introduce various computer applications. If you are considering
purchasing software, if you are a beginning computer user and need a boost to
get started, or if you are switching to new software and need to get off on the
right foot with self-directed learning, these courses are right for you.
USING . . .
These courses vary in length according to topic and provide more in-depth
experience with various operating systems and software packages. They are meant
for those who need to develop proficiency in the use of specific applications.
FACILITIES
Noncredit computer courses are taught in microcomputer laboratories on the USI
campus using the Windows operating system. Windows XP and Vista are used in the
labs, but Windows 95, 98, 2000, ME, and NT
users can also benefit from these courses.
CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION
All courses in this section carry continuing education hours for accountants and
health care administrators.

COMPUTERS FOR BEGINNERS
This series of four courses is designed for those with NO experience with
personal computers. It begins with vocabulary, keyboard skills, and mouse
mastery, then moves on through basic Windows and Internet skills. After
completing this series you should be ready for other computer courses,
further learning on your own, or deciding it's not for you!

MY FIRST COMPUTER
CLASS (for ages 20+)

Do you think you’re the only person in the world who’s never used a
computer? You are NOT alone. After an introduction to basic
vocabulary and computer components, you’ll learn about parts of the
computer, practice using the keyboard, and begin to tame the wild
mouse.

issues should you consider when buying your first home computer?
What software will
you use, what peripherals do you need, what are the ongoing costs
associated with computers? Where will you put your new computer? Get

WINDOWS: THE BASICS

Learn what the Windows (XP, 95, 98, 2000, ME and NT) operating system
does and why you should care. The
mysteries of the Control Panel, Windows Desktop, Notepad, Wordpad,
and more will be revealed, as well as basics of file
management. Practice time with screen manipulation
and creating shortcuts and folders is included.

INTERNET FOR FUN
AND LEARNING

Surf’s up and you
can catch a wave! Learn how to use search engines to find what you
want on the World Wide Web. You’ll also learn about how to get TO
the Internet, how to set up an email account, and security measures
for the information age.

GETTING STARTED WITH WINDOWS

Learn the basics of the
MicrosoftÒ
Windows operating system for personal computers.
Emphasis is on identifying icons and shortcuts, learning to
click and drag to size and position, and exploring the control
panel, files, folders, and accessories. We recommend allowing at
least three-four weeks between Getting Started with Windows and
Using Windows. Windows XP,
95, 98, 2000, ME, and NT users can benefit from these
courses.

USING WINDOWS

Take advantage of the power of Windows by learning to use its
special capabilities.
Topics include searching, formatting, copying and viewing, as well
as creating in Write and linking files from program to program.
We recommend allowing at least three-four weeks between

Learn to navigate the differences in the Windows VISTA operating
system. Students should be comfortable with basic functions from

For those who have never used word processing
or who know just enough to type and print a simple document. Covers
using directories, naming and saving files, moving files, following
print instructions, default document formatting, and adding document
enhancements.

USING WORD 2007

Explore one of the most popular word
processing programs, Microsoft Word. Topics include changing
document defaults; creating columns and tables; creating and editing
headers and footers; inserting bullets, graphics, and watermarks;
and text searches. Participants must be familiar with basic word
processing and Windows concepts.

package—spreadsheet, database, and graphics. Topics include copying

A hands-on course emphasizing financial
planning and analysis using the Excel electronic spreadsheet. Topics
include copying and moving data, file management, graphics, and

Excel experience, the course should be particularly useful to those
who need to store, query, and analyze large quantities of data.

A quick start on the Microsoft Access database system--covers
tables, queries, forms and reports. Emphasis will be on table design

A hands-on course emphasizing building and using your own databases
using Microsoft Access. Topics include copying and moving data;

GETTING STARTED WITH QUICKBOOKS

Get control of your finances by learning the basic skills to
maintain accounting records on QuickBooks.
Learn how to set up a QuickBooks file, answer the Easy Step
Interview, write checks, make deposits and keep your bank balance.
Participants need a basic knowledge of the Windows operating
system, such as how to move files, create folders or subdirectories,
copy files to and from various storage media, and run applications.
Bookkeeping knowledge suggested but not required.

USING QUICKBOOKS 2007

Continue to develop basic skills and learn to maintain a company’s accounting
records on QuickBooks, including setting up a chart of accounts, invoicing
customers, receiving customer payments and making bank deposits, entering and
paying vendor bills, reconciling bank statements, and generating financial
statements and other reports. Payroll processing and inventory will not be
covered in this course. Basic bookkeeping knowledge required.

CERTIFICATE IN COMPUTER PROFICIENCY
A Certificate in Computer
Proficiency has been developed to help individuals acquire and
demonstrate a body of knowledge of popular computer programs. This
60-hour certificate provides participants with hands-on training in
Microsoft®
Windows, Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint as well as usage and
benefits of the internet. The Certificate requires these courses:
Getting Started with and Using Windows, Getting Started with and
Using Word, Getting Started With and Using Excel, Getting Started
with and Using Access, any three-hour PowerPoint course and any
three-hour Internet course. A proficiency examination is required
upon completion of the course work. Those who believe they already
have the skills and knowledge taught in some or all of the required
Getting Started with courses may sit for an exemption examination.
The fee for the Certificate in Computer Proficiency is $100 plus the
standard cost of each course. This fee covers registration in
the certificate program, maintenance of personal files, and
administration of the post tests.
