Continuing Education for Licensed Social Workers & Therapists

USI is an approved provider of continuing education for social workers, marriage and family therapists, mental health counselors, psychologists, and other professionals licensed in the state of Indiana. Social workers in other states should check for approval on a program-by-program basis. Continuing education hours for these professions are awarded on a contact hour basis.

UNDERSTANDING CRIMINAL LAW FOR SOCIAL WORKERS NO. SOC221
Understanding Criminal Law for Social Workers will focus on decoding one of the largest, most expensive, and least understood branches of government. Social workers routinely assist clients in navigating the legal system. This workshop will assist you in understanding the role of a prosecutor's office, including how decisions are made on whether the prosecutor is the official best suited to handle a particular situation. Topics will include some common and no-so-common concepts in criminal law, along with how those concepts may be different in law than in common usage. For example, what does it really mean to prove someone guilty beyond a reasonable doubt? The workshop also will touch on the Constitutional Amendments, the Indiana Criminal Code, the Indiana Rules of Evidence, and basic statutory interpretation. The focus will not be on a vocational knowledge of these issues, but an introduction to the concepts, what the concepts mean in daily life, and how those concepts impact our criminal justice system.

Date: Friday, October 23, 2009, 1- 4 p.m.
Location: Rice Library, Room 0017 (lower level)
Registration Fee: $35 for professionals, $15 for students; after October 16: $45 for professionals, $20 for students. This course includes materials and (3) continuing education hours for psychologists, social workers, counselors, and mental health professionals.
