STUDIES WORKSHOPS
As part of a grant from the Institute for Museum and Library
Services, the University of Southern Indiana will present four
one-day workshops on historic preservation, interpretation,
collection processing, and digitization. These will be day-long
workshops that include hands-on work on specific proposals brought
by the participants. Workshop participants will receive a workbook
and a flash drive with information from the workshops and samples of
proposals.
Lunch is included in the fee. USI students who wish to take these
workshops for one hour of University credit must contact Dr. Tamara
Hunt to register for History 490.
BASIC INTRODUCTION TO GRANT WRITING

Topics will include program planning and proposal writing; creating
a problem statement/needs assessment; identifying objectives;
exploring methods for attaining objectives; self-evaluation plan;
identifying future funding needs; and budgets. Prior to the
workshop, attendees should identify a project for which external
funds could be solicited, and be prepared to work on that project
during the workshop.

FINDING FUNDING SOURCES

This workshop will focus on finding funding sources. Topics will
include letters of inquiry to funders; how to research funding
sources; private and public funding sources; and aligning your needs
with funding sources. Prior to the workshop, attendees should
identify a project for which external funds could be solicited, and
be prepared to work on that project during the workshop.

ADVANCED HISTORIC PRESERVATION:

Beginning with an overview of the use, management, and care of
artifact collections, this workshop will teach registration methods,
the acquisition process, loan procedures, and storage solutions for
three-dimensional artifacts. Participants will construct artifact
storage containers and learn
methods of preventive conservation.

ARTIFACT INTERPRETATION

This workshop will explore the various ways to use artifacts in
order to educate, inspire, and challenge the public in museum
settings and beyond. Participants will analyze artifacts as the
basis for exhibits, outreach programs, and fundraising opportunities
in order to create specialized projects which are engaging and
meaningful for their respective communities.

ADVANCED COLLECTION PROCESSING WORKSHOP

This workshop will include a review of different systems for
processing collections as well as industry standards. It will cover
procedures, policies, and best practices for creating finding aids
that can open doors for researchers and create an inventory of
materials. The first half of the session will be a review of theory
of processing and the second half will be time in the archive,
actually processing collections. Participants are welcome to bring
in collections, or materials will be available for hands-on
experience, working with materials and producing a finished product.

DIGITIZATION AND PHOTOGRAPHY PRESERVATION

Learn the basics of digitizing photograph collections at this
one-day workshop. Participants will learn about the best practices
for creating and maintaining digital collections.
