Tour of Historic CorydonBattle of Corydon Memorial Park - The Battle of Corydon was the only Civil War battle fought on Indiana soil. On July 9, 1863, 450 members of the Harrison County Home Guard tried to delay Gen. John Hunt Morgan's 2,400 Confederate soldiers until Union reinforcements could arrive. The home guard, led by Col. Lewis Jordan, drew a battle line behind a barricade of logs. The battle lasted less than an hour, but it was spirited-- four of the home guards were killed, 355 were captured, and the rest escaped. Of the Raiders, 11 were killed and 40 wounded. When Morgan entered Corydon, he released the prisoners and began plundering stores and collecting ransom money from families. The Raiders took $690 from the County Treasury, $600 from each of two stores, and between $700 and $1000 from each of three mills to save them from being burned. |
