Tour of Historic CorydonThe Courthouse on the Hill - In 1811, an unfinished log house on this site was purchased by Harrison County for $500 to serve as its first Courthouse. When the territorial capital moved from Vincennes to Corydon in 1813, territorial officers shared the quarters with the Harrison County Officials. Forty-three delegates from the Indiana Territory's 13 counties met in this Courthouse to draw up the first constitution. Because it was so hot and cramped indoors, the delegates moved outside to the famous Constitution Elm. Near the Elm was a spring providing cool drinking water and a place to cool their jugs of brandy. The present house was built in 1917 and is a private home. |
