Atheneum:  a Greek word meaning "a place of learning"; the Visitor Center in New Harmony

communal society:  a group of people who share goods and property

dormitory:  a building where many people live

experiment:  test, trial, or research

geologist:  a scientist that studies the earth's history as recorded in rocks

harmony:  peace; agreement; friendship

labyrinth:  a maze; in New Harmony, a garden maze

Pestalozzian Method:  a Swiss method of education with emphasis placed on learning by experience rather than by books

prefabricate:  to make separate parts of a building designed to easily fit together

reform:  to make something better

religious persecution:  unfair punishment or mistreatment because of one's religion
