Week Two - Summer Programs for Children

July 14-18 @ Castle Elementary: Animals Two By Two (grades K-1)

1. Goldfish and Guppies

Observe and describe fish structures
Observe and compare fish behaviors
Observe fish behaviors in an aquatic environment

2. Big Worms and Little Worms

Observe, describe and compare worm structures
Observe and compare worm behaviors
Observe worm interactions with its environment

3. Pill Bugs and Sow Bugs

Observe identifiable structures
Observe and describe behavior influenced by environmental conditions
Identify basic needs for survival

July 14-18 @ Castle Elementary: Air & Weather (grades 1-2)

1. Exploring Air

Use vials, water, syringes, tubing, parachutes and balloon rockets to investigate how:
Air takes up space
Air resistance affects how things move
Air can be compressed
Air under pressure can move things

2. Wind Explorations

Use pinwheels, bubbles, kites, wind vanes, and anemometers to explore moving air.
Observe and compare the action of moving air and its affect on objects.
Observe and describe the direction of the wind using wind vanes.
Observe and describe the speed of the wind using an anemometer.

3. Observing Weather

Observe and record daily weather on a class calendar and in individual journals (temperature, precipitation, and cloud types)
Organize and graph class weather data

July 14-18 @ Castle Elementary: Magnetism and Electricity (grades 3-4)

1. Force

Observe and measure magnetic interactions (forces of attraction/repulsion and the affect of distance between magnets)

2. Making Connections

Build simple open and closed circuits
Predict conductivity of materials
Sort materials into insulators and conductors

3. Advanced Connections

Build and understand defining characteristics of series and parallel circuits

July 14-18 @ Castle Elementary: Environments (grades 5-6)

1. Bugs and Beetles (Darkling Beetles and Isopods)

Determine preferred environmental conditions (soil type and light vs. dark)
Relate behavior of animals to environmental factors

2. Aquatic Environment

Create small aquariums with fish, aquatic plants and aquatic snails
Identify living and nonliving environmental factors
Observe and describe changes in the environment
Use a chemical indicator to identify and measure an environmental factor
Relate differences in acid content to changes in carbon dioxide

3. Brine Shrimp Hatching

Experiment to determine range of tolerance and optimum conditions to salinity for brine shrimp eggs to hatch
Organize data to compare results
