STAB-SEWN BINDING BASICS                                                       NO. ALP201
Learn how to make elegant and beautiful books in the Eastern, stab-sewn style in this workshop. Participants will receive an overview of the traditional form of the stab-sewn book, and instruction on how to make three different sewing patterns which they will take home. Steve Cochran, a book artist, binder, and librarian, is owner and proprietor of Bound to be Around Bindery. Steve has been making book and paper art for 20 years.

BEGINNING BLOCK PRINTING ON FABRIC                                   NO. ALP205
Learn the basic principles of textile pattern design by block-printing your own bandanas. We will learn how to design a good printable motif, and then prepare our easy-to-carve blocks. Practicing first on construction paper, we will end by printing up to four cotton bandanas with washable textile inks. Students will need to bring sketching paper, pencil, scissors, apron, and rubber gloves.

SHAKESPEARE FOR BEGINNERS                                                   NO. ALP437
If you always wanted to read and understand Shakespeare, but feared the difficulty of his language, this course will suit you. We will read four easy plays to learn about how Will Shakespeare structures his drama, how he reveals character and conflict, how he uses such strategies as soliloquy and aside—and, as time allows, we will view scenes
from recent productions. Most of all, we will focus on basic understanding and enjoyment. By the course’s end, you can boast of your Will power. Books provided.

GETTING STARTED ON DRUM SET                                                NO. ALP420
Professional drummer Gregg Martin will introduce students to all the instruments that make up a modern day drum set. In his studio at The Guitar Lab, students will view demonstrations of proper technique and producing a good tone from drums and cymbals. Students will learn basic rhythms, hand/feet coordination, beats, and fills for the drum set. The class will culminate with students playing along with recorded music which will include rock and popular styles. Enrollment limited to four.

BEGINNING STAMPING
AND CARD MAKING TECHNIQUES                                               NO. ALP415
In this overview class, we will begin with basic stamping and explore several different techniques often used in card-making, scrapbooking and other paper crafting projects. We will “play” with heat embossing, dry embossing, die-cutting machines, and other fun paper crafting tools. You will leave with a finished project each class. Bring an adhesive of your choice to each class. All paper and other supplies will be provided.

MAKING SINGLE-GATHERING JOURNALS                                     NO. ALP202
People who are art journal keepers are encouraged to attend, in order to learn how simple it is to make elegant, durable, and very portable journals. Participants will construct a 24- and 32-page journal, selecting from various available cover stock or supplying their own. A simple sewing pattern will be taught that incorporates a closure. Steve Cochran, a book artist, binder, and librarian, is owner and proprietor of Bound to be Around Bindery. Steve has been making book and paper art for 20 years. Participants are welcome to bring their own materials to incorporate into
their journal.

BEGINNING HAWAIIAN HULA                                                       NO. ALP412
Aloha! Bring a taste of the tropics to your summer “staycation.” Come put a pua (flower) in your hair and learn the graceful moves of Hula. You’ll be able to perform a complete Hula dance for your friends and family by the final week of class. Embrace the expressions of Hula and have a great time with new friends. MODERN JEWELRY DESIGN FOR THE BEGINNER                          NO. ALP203
Using basic tools and techniques, jewelry artist Sara Rhoades from S.K. Rhoades Design will teach you how to use beads to create contemporary designs. We will discuss current jewelry trends that use leather, cording, simple wire wrapping, and beads to enhance your wardrobe. Bring sharp scissors, round-nose pliers, chain-nose pliers, and wire cutters. Each student will receive a materials kit needed for the class and will leave with at least two pieces of finished jewelry.

PAINTING SUMMER LANDSCAPES                                                 NO. ALP414
Painting with user-friendly acrylics, Kelly Gilbert will lead you through the landscape painting process. Learn how to deal with mixing all the varieties of green, successful handling of water, trees, and clouds, developing a center of interest, creating depth, and using overlapping perspective color harmony. Supply list will be sent with confirmation. Estimated cost of supplies $70.

BEGINNING BATIK ON FABRIC                                                     NO. ALP206
Learn the ancient art of Batik on fabric and create your own bandana scarves in a day. Batik is the art of tracing a design on fabric with hot beeswax using a special “tjanting” tool, and then dyeing the fabric. When the wax is removed (usually by ironing) the waxed areas will remain uncolored while the background will be dyed. Students will learn basics of resist design and be able to make up to three cotton bandana scarves during the afternoon class. Students will need to bring rubber gloves, an apron, sketching paper, and a pen or pencil.

BRING IN THE BLING!
INTERMEDIATE JEWELRY DESIGN                                               NO. ALP204
Build your jewelry-making skills by going green and up-cycling jewelry you already own! Jewelry artist Sara Rhoades from S.K. Rhoades Design will show you how to take necklace findings and make earrings, earrings to make pendants. Each piece will be utilized individually to make an effective new design. We will talk in depth about esthetics and the principles of design and learn a few new techniques along the way. Bring jewelry, found objects, and/or beads from your personal collection, sharp scissors, round-nose pliers, chain-nose pliers, and wire cutters. Students will receive materials to finish their pieces and each student will leave with at least two pieces of finished jewelry.

INTRODUCTION TO CERAMICS                                                      NO. ALP208
Instructor Jennifer Holstein will teach students the fundamentals of creating functional pottery on the wheel, as well as basic techniques for hand-building forms. During this three-week intensive course, participants will be guided through every aspect of making unique, utilitarian drinking vessels and dishes, as well as be given the opportunity to produce sculptural and decorative objects. Special focus will be given to strength of form united with skill in glazing to produce beautiful, lasting work. Merging a modern sensibility with traditional technique will help each student
develop an individualized aesthetic while acquiring a new skill.

STARTING WITH SONNETS                                                           NO. ALP436
To gain a basic understanding of poetry, we will start with the sonnet, a 14-line lyric, a poetic response to subjects ranging from romantic infatuation to fear of damnation to awe at some of nature’s hideous creations. We will study closely two traditional forms of sonnets, major sonneteers in English and American literature, and the many poetic
devices these writers use to develop their lyrics. Our classes will cover fewer poems so we may read them closely.

I DIDN’T KNOW THAT!
AN UNCOMMON LOOK AT BACKYARD BIRDS                                NO. ALP411
In this course we will explore 18 of the most common birds found in the Tri-state, their common and very uncommon behaviors, and how to attract them to our home habitats. We also will look at some of the beautiful “uncommon” birds that can be found throughout the Tri-state on any given summer’s day. Plenty of time will be built in for class questions and participation.

SIMPLE WEAVING FOR CHILDREN 6-11 YEARS OLD                    NO. ALP209
It is never too early to begin weaving. Children – even boys – tend to be thrilled by the technology that weaving presents! Each child will be provided with a simple, reusable cardboard loom and yarns. We will learn to warp (windthread on) the loom, and then to interlace the threads together and make a small weaving. Parents are welcome for free (so you can help your child later if he/she forgets any part of the process). Looms are re-useable, and are a part of the class fee.

EXPERIMENTS IN WEAVING                                                     NO. ALP416
Learn the basics of weaving through experimenting with various ready-made, repurposed and recycled objects and materials. We will construct various types of simple looms, improvise and construct our own tools, and learn about warping and basic weaving techniques using our newly constructed looms and tools. SOFT SCULPTURE FOR CHILDREN 11 AND UP                               NO. ALP210
Instructor Jennifer Holstein will introduce students to the fundamentals of sewing in this one-day course. By pairing basic techniques with imagination, participants will learn how to create their own pattern and turn it into a finished plush piece. The skills learned can contribute to a long- term relationship with sewing, whether it is mending a favorite garment or creating one-of-a-kind soft sculpture. Students should bring a pair of sharp scissors.

BEGINNING SCREEN PRINTING ON FABRIC                                 NO. ALP207
Learn the basics of designing a repeating pattern, making a design, and printing it on fabric with a stencil screen of your own design. During the first class, we will discuss what makes a good print, learn how to put a design into an allover repeat, and design an image for printing onto fabric. In the second class, your screen will be ready to print, and we will learn the basics of printing (first on paper). Each student will be provided with six bandanas to print. Finishing techniques (for fixing the ink onto the fabric) will complete the class. Students need to bring sketch
paper and a pencil.

PRIMITIVE RUG HOOKING FOR BEGINNERS                                NO. ALP200
Instructor Rita Davis will teach students how to hook a mat, trivet, or other simple rug-hooking project during this beginner’s workshop. Rita will cover many aspects of this increasingly popular craft, have examples of her work on display, and will give one-on-one student instruction during the workshop. Students will receive a kit that contains the design backing, wool, and hook. Hooking frames will be available to use during the class. Students should bring a pair of sharp scissors.
