CREATIVE POTTERY                                                     NO.ALP406

Learn the potter’s wheel one-on-one with a professional clay artist who has over 35 years of experience. Hand building, glazing, firing, and the historical and technical aspects of clay will be taught in the relaxing atmosphere of the artist’s home studio. Enrollment is limited to six; cost of supplies included in registration fee.

PAINTING IS EASY                                                         NO. ALP4

If you have never tried painting now is your opportunity! We will be using acrylic paints which are non-toxic, inexpensive, and is a user-friendly media. The techniques learned in this class are easily applied to decorative painting or transferred to oil painting. Working with a minimum of paints, the instructor will give easy to follow instructions on how to mix color, create the look of flowers, clouds, snow and sand. This is a lot of fun, so bring a friend and prepare to learn just how easy painting can be. The registration fee does not include materials; students will need to supply their own. Materials list will be mailed.

CREATE DYNAMIC CHARACTERS
                                   NO.ALP437
Of the four main elements of fiction, characterization is the most important. Characters pull the reader into the story and keep them there. Characters reveal their emotions as they struggle to meet their goals, and characters move the story along as they change and grow in the face of adversity. This tightly focused, six-week workshop will teach beginning and mid-level writers how to people stories with living, breathing characters that will capture a reader's interest right from the start. Learn about six types of fictional characters, how to find them, sculpt them, breathe life into them, and give them motivation, intent, name them, and introduce them to your readers. Workshop participants will be encouraged, but not required to read from their own work.

SUMMER LANDSCAPING BASICS                                          NO.ALP415

Whether you are a fist-time homeowner or a novice landscaper, you will benefit from learning the basics of summer landscaping in this course. Learn the common mistakes in home landscaping, including how soil pH is a major factor in successful landscape plans; the difference between shade and sun plants, as well as hot to have a beautiful garden every season. each participant will take home a perennial landscape plant to get started.

GETTING TO KNOW YOUR DIGITAL CAMERA

Learn to get most out of your digital camera from an experienced, professional photographer. Class topics include composition, creativity, and using camera features that go beyond the basics. Learn how to use PhotoStory3 to design stories and presentations using your own digital photos and music! Participants in this class will learn how to connect a digital camera to a computer, copy pictures from the camera  to your computer, use a scanner to copy print photos, and make a digital slide show on the computer or email to friends and family!

Is your home graced by the work of a budding Picasso or Frank Lloyd Wright? Help your young artist hone skills and explore career options through this course which combines both studio work and field trips. Students ages 10 through 13 will explore drawing, painting, graphic design, and drafting during 3 studio sessions. On alternate weeks, parents will transport students to various destinations to be introduced to career possibilities in the art field. Get ready for a great school by learning skills that will help you increase your creativity and answer that age-old question, "Just what do teachers want?" Improve your organizational and study skills, learn note-taking and outlining techniques, how to use reference materials and study for tests, and tips for writing reports. You also will explore your learning style, enhance your creativity, increase your study skills, and lay the groundwork for increasingly independent decision making. Parents are encouraged to attend the pre- and post-instructor/parent sessions. The pre-session will discuss individual children's needs, while the post-session will offer helpful suggestions for each student to further develop their learning styles.

BEGINNING CONVERSATIONAL SPANISH                    NO. LGN402

Learn basic conversational Spanish and feel more at ease when you travel or encounter Spanish speakers in business and social situations. Emphasis is on building vocabulary. Cost of text, 30 Days to Great Spanish, CD, and dictionary included in registration fee.

Begin learning basic conversational phrases in Modern Standard Arabic, the version of Arabic commonly spoken across the Middle East and North Africa, as well as customs and traditions useful to travelers for business or pleasure in the Arab world. Although the written alphabet will not be featured, this course, taught by a native speaker, will assist any student in beginning a thorough study of the language. It begins with vocabulary, keyboard skills, and mouse mastery, then moves on through basic Windows and Internet skills. After completing this series you should be ready for other computer courses, further learning on your own, or deciding it's not for you!

USI'S COLLEGE ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM (CAP)
The University of Southern Indiana's College Achievement Program (CAP) offers fully accredited college courses in many local high schools during the regular school day for outstanding junior and senior students. Selected teachers from participating high schools have completed advanced seminars in their subject area and received USI adjunct instructor appointments, qualifying them to teach USI courses off campus. Your high school may offer one or more of the following courses: English, history, biology, chemistry, health professions, economics or math.
