THERE’S A LIBRARIAN IN MY SOUP: COURSE INCLUSION OF RESEARCH CONSULTATIONS TO ENHANCE STUDENT LEARNING
Learn about the collaboration between librarians at Rice Library and students enrolled in two upper-level health professions classes taught by Kevin Valadares. In the spring and fall of 2008, librarians met individually with Dr. Valadares’ students, guiding them to in-depth information about specific health care issues. Having learned effective strategies to find and evaluate research studies, data, visual aids, web sites and government information, students stated the librarians’ enthusiasm for the discovery process made the student feel confident about their final presentations. Attendees will learn various methods for embedding librarian consultation into their courses.

CREATING A CULTURE OF ASSESSMENT
An interdisciplinary brainstorming session held to investigate campus-wide perceptions of the curricular mission at USI. Participants invited to share their point of view regarding the USI mission and “brand”. Participants are also asked to share how their courses serve to facilitate the fulfillment of university-wide learning outcomes. These chalk-talk discussions will provide the foundation for a curriculum audit conducted in spring 2009. Faculty members are encouraged to participate and provide their insights for developing a culture of assessment at USI.
