Scholarship Guidelines

NOTE: These scholarships are limited to the first bachelor's degree at USI.

Presidential Scholarship
Recipients must maintain a cumulative USI grade point average of 3.2 (4-point scale) through 62 semester hours attempted; thereafter, the student must maintain a 3.4 cumulative GPA. A minimum of 30 semester hours must be successfully completed each academic year. In addition, a Presidential Scholar must maintain full-time enrollment (minimum of 12 semester hours) in each regular semester (fall and spring). Scholarship coverage of summer enrollment requires special arrangements to be made with the director of Student Financial Assistance.

Deans Scholarship
Award recipients must enroll as full-time students during the fall and each successive regular semester following award notification. Exceptions are made to permit fall graduates to begin University enrollment in the spring. A full-time student is defined as one who enrolls in at least 12 official semester hours each fall and spring. Official enrollment is determined on census day (5th day of fall and spring). Failure to comply with these requirements nullifies the award and all future entitlement. Exceptions to the minimum enrollment requirement will be made for only bonfide medical or academic reasons. Award recipients may not utilize the Deans Scholarship for summer enrollment.

Deans Scholarship recipients may participate in the program for no more than 4 consecutive calendar years from the date of initial enrollment or until a total of 136 semester hours have been earned whichever comes first. Under exceptional circumstances, a student may petition the Director of Student Financial Assistance for a "leave of absence" for one semester and an extension of calendar year limits.

The Deans Scholarship offer is valid only during the fall semester (spring semester for fall graduates) of the year in which the award is made and will not be offered a second time. The award may be renewed automatically if the student earns a minimum of 27 semester hours each academic year (fall and spring) and maintains the required minimum cumulative grade point average. Any deficit in earned hours may be made up in the summer at the student's expense.

The required minimum cumulative GPA is 2.5/4.0 up through 61 semester hours earned, 2.75 after earning 62 to 92 hours, and 3.0 thereafter. Students who fail to earn the required minimum cumulative GPA will be placed on probation for one semester. Failure to comply with the cumulative GPA requirement after one probationary semester will result in cancellation of the Deans Scholarship and forfeiture of all future entitlement.

The Office of Student Financial Assistance will evaluate earned hours after the Spring Semester. Students may make up earned hours deficits in the summer term at their own expense. A written request for review of Deans Scholarship eligibility must be sent to the Director of Student Financial Assistance after summer grades are officially recorded on the student's transcript.

Departmental Scholarship
Award recipients must officially enroll as full-time students during the fall and each successive regular semester following award notification. Official enrollment is determined on census day (5th day of fall and spring). Failure to comply with official enrollment requirements nullifies the award and all future entitlement. Exceptions are made to permit fall graduates to enroll in the spring if application for admission is completed by the preceding November 1. Exceptions to the minimum enrollment requirement will be made for only bonafide medical and academic reasons. In addition, students must successfully complete at least 27 semester hours each academic year (fall and spring). NOTE: DS awards are available for the regular academic year (fall/spring) only.

Students receiving the DS as freshmen may participate in the program for no more than 4 consecutive calendar years from the date of initial enrollment or until a total of 136 semester hours have been earned whichever comes first. Students receiving the DS as community college transfers entering USI with junior class standing may participate in the program for no more than 2 consecutive calendar years from the date of initial enrollment or until a total of 68 semester hours have been earned whichever comes first.

The DS offer is valid only during the next regular (fall and/or spring) semester of the year in which the award is made and will not be offered a second time. The award may be renewed automatically if the student officially enrolls full time and successfully completes a minimum of 27 semester hours semester hours each academic year (fall and spring) with the required minimum cumulative GPA. Deficits in earned hours and cumulative GPA may be made up at the student's expense during the summer. GPA deficits must be made up by taking classes at USI.

The required cumulative grade point average (GPA) is as follows:

For students receiving annual awards in excess of $1,000:
a. after earning 0 to 61 hours, a cumulative GPA of 2.50/4.0;
b. after earning 62 to 92 hours, a cumulative GPA of 2.75/4.0;

The Office of Student Financial Assistance will evaluate the cumulative grade point average after two semesters of full-time attendance and at the conclusion of Spring Semester thereafter.
