Sophomore Jessica Lingafelter is the recipient of the Victor V. Schriefer Jr. Endowed Baccalaureate/Doctor of Medicine Scholarship. The Wadesville resident is a biology major whose career plans include medical school.

“Are they treating you well?” asked Victor Schriefer when he met Jessica in the Science Center microbiology lab. She replied in the affirmative as she explained her summer research work collecting, preserving, identifying, and sorting macroinvertebrates from the Blue River. She told him how the organisms help identify pollution in rivers and streams. Her collection, which will be the basis of a research paper, will become part of the USI teaching collection.

Schriefer also funds a B/MD Scholarship for Steven Miller, a USI junior from Boonville. Both students are advised by Dr. R. Brent Summers, assistant professor of biology and faculty advisor to scholars.

Schriefer’s interest in medical students is a link to his father who graduated from IU School of Medicine in the 1930s. His father located in St. Meinrad directly out of medical school and later moved to Evansville where he practiced for over 40 years. “I wish I would have had the chance these students do,” said Schriefer. Schriefer added, “A special thanks to alumnus Ron Boren ‘81 for introducing me to the opportunities at USI. It was his enthusiasm and professionalism, along with the advice of Development director David Bower, that convinced me I wanted to be part of the University.” In addition to the financial rewards, the B/MD scholarship also provides a provisional seat in the IU School of Medicine. B/MD students must enroll continuously through the four years, have a 3.5 GPA upon college graduation, and earn an MCAT score equal to the average of the previous year’s entering class at Indiana University. Six B/MD scholarships are offered each year at USI.

Schriefer was awarded an honorary doctoral degree during the 2008 USI spring Commencement for his generous support of the academic program in pre-medicine. Dr. Schriefer holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Evansville, where he majored in biology and chemistry.
