“He never stopped talking about it,” explained Rosemary O’Daniel when describing how her father-in-law Joseph E. O’Daniel would tell the family about the establishment of public higher education in Evansville.
D. Patrick O’Daniel, the second son of Joseph and Marie O’Daniel, knew his father accepted civic responsibility over business interests. The elder O’Daniel had an ability to convince people about a project’s- worth. “He was a positive person and tenacious,” the younger O’Daniel said.
“When we spent time together, my father always talked glowingly of the University of Southern Indiana and what value it brings to Southern Indiana.
“My father was a self-educated man who had little formal education. He considered education a gift.
“Now that Rosemary and I have five children, 13 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild, development is important to us.
“We know the University meant so much to my father and mother. Recently we funded building needs in a discipline that was central to him.”
The O’Daniel Atrium in the Business and Engineering Center symbolizes to students, alumni, faculty and staff, benefactors, and visitors that civic responsibility and appreciation for learning continue through generations.
