Gordon Brown’s Presidential Scholarship from Alcoa affords him the gifts of time and freedom in addition to tuition, room, and board. A junior biology major with a minor in psychology, Brown is involved in extracurricular activities and maintains a grade-point average of 3.97.
“Being a Presidential Scholar allows me to put my focus and energy on academics and other aspects of college life,” the Evansville native said. “It allows me to perform to the best of my ability.” He is taking a Latin course to expand his understanding of English vocabulary.
An Honors student, Brown plays a variety of intramural sports and is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and the USI chapter of Habitat for Humanity. He tutors USI students in biology, chemistry, and psychology.
Off campus, he is a volunteer youth basketball coach for elementary and middle school students. “We try to develop individual skills and an ability to work as a team,” he said. “It’s fun and rewarding when they put what we’ve taught them to use and succeed. If I didn’t have the scholarship, I couldn’t have justified a volunteer job.”
After earning his bachelor’s degree, Brown plans to attend medical school.
