John M. Lawrence

potential

John M. Lawrence ’73 believes most of us do not do enough for the individuals who made us who we are. “The way you say ’thank you’ is by doing something very direct to honor them,” he said.

An accounting graduate, Lawrence moved back to his native Evansville about five years ago after 30 years as a forensic accountant with the U.S. Department of the Treasury. He continues to practice in four states. He also is an internationally known expert on ancient manuscripts.

Lawrence recalls his USI years as formative - with qualified faculty who were accessible to students. He has provided gifts that recognize Dr. Daniel C. Scavone and Dr. Donald E. Pitzer, professors emeriti of history. He is working with the USI Foundation to establish awards in honor of other faculty who had an impact on his education and success.

Lawrence’s greatest priority has been to remember his late wife Melissa Faye Lawrence, a nurse. The nursing scholarship he established in her memory is the largest in the College of Nursing and Health Professions. He also honors nursing educators with an award for teaching excellence, the University’s largest faculty award.

“It gives me great pleasure to do this,” he said. “I feel a connection.”
