The USI Foundation's Contribution to the University
Because the USI Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation that is
organized exclusively to serve the University of Southern Indiana, but is
corporately separate from the University, it can make a unique contribution
providing services that the University cannot provide, or cannot provide as
easily, for itself:
The USI Foundation is entrusted to keep donor records confidential. This is important to donors, regardless of the amounts of their gifts. Planned gifts often entail having on file highly personal documents such as wills, trusts, or estate plans.
-
The USI Foundation provides the University with flexibility. Once the
state's biennial appropriation is made, USI has little latitude to take
advantage of unanticipated opportunities or to deal with unexpected needs.
Gift funds provide vice president, deans, department chairs, and program
administrators with alternate options.
-
The USI Foundation can acquire property for the University. At the
University's request, the Foundation can arrange financing to purchase property
and can carry the loan at interest while the University requests funding and
receives approvals.
-
The USI Foundation provides the stewardship, accounting, and investment services
which donors require.
-
The USI Foundation is able to earn greater return on investments of gift funds
because certain statutory limitations that apply to state institutions making
investments do not apply to private or not-for-profit corporation.
- Most importantly, the USI Foundation offers an opportunity to get involved at the University of Southern Indiana. Through their involvement as volunteers or donors, more than 6,000 people each year use the Foundation as a vehicle to express their philanthropic commitment to higher education.
