The desktop computer, which years ago seemed so futuristic, has now become nearly as commonplace as telephones and televisions.
In the case of the handheld computer, or PDA, the opportunity for technology integration into the classroom presents some intriguing learning opportunities at a fraction of the cost of traditional desktop computers while offering the added benefit of portability.
With the help of a faculty development grant, my colleagues and I devised a project that focuses on introducing handheld computers into middle school classrooms. Teachers are trained to use handhelds and then encouraged to incorporate them into their science classrooms. Lessons range from investigating water quality to building containers with better heating capacities.
Working with area teachers we have developed
a better understanding how kids learn and their perceptions of technology on
the scientific process. Students report that when using handhelds they enjoy
experiments more, develop a better sense of prediction, and very quickly become
comfortable with them. Teachers comment that they help students better
understand graphs, enhance data analysis, and increase understanding of the
scientific method.
