Voter Information

5 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ON ELECTION DAY

1) PLAN AHEAD Visit www.IndianaVoters.com or call 1-866-IN-1-VOTE (866-461-8683) to check your voter registration and polling place location  You may also call your county clerk's office or county board of voter registration for more information.
2) I.D.
―DON'T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT. A voter must provide government issued photo ID before casting a ballot.  The ID must 1) Display the voter's photo; 2) Display the voter's name, and the name must conform to the voter's registration record; 3) Display an expiration date and either must be current or have expired sometime after the date of the last General Election (November 7, 2006); and 4) Be issued by the State of Indiana or the U.S. government.
***In most cases, an Indiana driver's license, Indiana photo ID card (available free
of charge for voting purposes from the BMV), U.S. Passport, or Military ID is
         sufficient Visit www.PhotoID.in.gov.
3) YOUR BALLOT, YOUR VOTE Don't panic if you registered to vote but your name is not on the list.  Get help from a poll worker to make sure your vote is counted.  You may be directed to another polling place or given a provisional ballot.  Poll workers are there to help you.
4) WRITING ON THE WALL Look at the signs at the polling place for directions on how to use the voting machines, a list of your voting rights, and instructions for filing a complaint if your rights have been violated.
5) ACCESSIBILITY Every polling place is required to have facilities and voting machines accessible to elderly voters and voters with disabilities.  For more information on your county's accessible voting equipment and polling locations, visit www.sos.in.gov/elections/hava or call your county clerk's office.

First Time Voters ― FYI:

If you're a first time voter who registered by mail, bring an additional proof of identity (besides your driver's license) such as a current utility bill or bank statement, government document, paycheck, or valid photo ID.

If you're a student and want to vote in a precinct near your school, (rather than applying for an absentee ballot) you can do so without risk of losing your financial aid or your parent's financial benefits.

Before you can vote in the 2008 General Election, you must register. The deadline to register to vote is Monday, October 6, 2008. Voter registration forms and applications for absentee ballots are available in several locations on campus.

Anyone not registered to vote may do so on or before October 6 in the following USI offices: Residence Life Center front desk; Government Relations located in the Wright Administration Building, Room 102; Rice Library's check-out desk; Student Development Programs, UC Room 015; and the Registrar's Office located in the Orr Center, Room 1075.

Below is important information concerning the 2008 General Election provided by the Office of Indiana’s Secretary of State.

Three things to remember for the October 6 Voter Registration Deadline
The October 6 voter registration deadline is quickly approaching. Are you registered? Remember these three things:

Register to Vote: Voters wishing to register for the first time in Indiana must do so on or before the October 6, 2008, deadline. Additionally, voters who have moved or changed their name must update their information by the same deadline.

Anyone not registered to vote may register in person at the county voter registration office, county clerk’s office, or at any Bureau of Motor Vehicles license branch. Voters may also obtain a registration form online at the Secretary of State’s Web page, www.IndianaVoters.com. These forms can be filled out and mailed in if post-marked on or before the October 6 deadline.

Under Indiana law, each person who applies to register to vote must state the address of their "permanent residence." For some, but not all college students, their permanent residence will be the address that they traveled from to attend school. For other college students, who have no intention of returning to that address, their permanent residence will be in the community where they are attending school. A person can only have one permanent residence under Indiana law. However, where a person's permanent residence is located will depend on the facts of their situation and their intentions.

Photo ID: Voters registered in Indiana will be required to show an ID issued by either the state of Indiana or the United States government. If you currently hold an out-of-state ID, but consider Indiana your permanent address, you can surrender it and opt to receive an Indiana ID card (free of charge) or Driver’s License. Please visit www.photoID.in.gov for more information.

Absentee Voting: Any registered voter who will be absent from his or her home precinct on Election Day may vote by absentee ballot. You may visit the county election board office in the county where you are registered to vote in-person absentee starting October 6 and continuing until noon, Monday, November 3, 2008 (the day before Election Day). Qualifying voters also may submit an application for a mail-in absentee ballot by completing form ABS-1 available online at www.IndianaVoters.com. or at your county election office on or before October 27, 2008.

More Information: Hoosiers can check their voter registration status and look up county-specific contact information by visiting www.IndianaVoters.com. or by calling the Hoosier Voter Hotline, 1-866-IN-1-VOTE (1-866-461-8683).
