Program Objectives

The Master of Science in Education degree programs involve advanced study designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of teachers in elementary, middle, junior high, and senior high schools. Programs are offered in elementary and secondary education. The programs blend studies of educational theory with analysis of current issues and practices in teaching. Students explore the ways in which knowledge and skills developed in the programs enhance classroom experience.

Admission Requirements

1. Graduation with a Bachelor’s Degree (minimum cumulative GPA 2.5) from a college or university accredited by NCATE  or a comparable association.
2. A minimum GPA of 3.0 in all courses taken at the graduate level at all schools attended.
3. An undergraduate record that provides adequate preparation to begin graduate study.
4. Satisfactory performance in Praxis II as evidenced by holding a teaching license, even if expired.
5. A minimum of two (2) years teaching experience or other commensurate experience.
6. A MSE Personal Information Form sent to the Graduate Studies Office.

Students admitted for Master’s study are expected to attend an orientation session with the Director of Graduate Programs in Education to plan an appropriate program of study.

Degree Requirements

1. Admission to candidacy for the degree. Candidacy application to be completed after 18 semester hours of coursework.

2. Completion of 33 semester hours of coursework with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

3. Approval by the advisor of the completed graduate student portfolio for candidacy, as well as the teacher action research project at the end of the program.

4. Completion of a formal application for graduation.
