Health Promotion and Worksite Wellness Program

Description of Program
The prevalence of chronic conditions and the rising cost of healthcare has prompted many employers and their employees to establish a healthy workplace. The concepts of health promotion within a worksite wellness program can benefit the employer by lowering absenteeism, increasing productivity, and managing health care costs.  The employee can benefit by improving personal health, boosting self-esteem, and increasing job satisfaction.

Who Should Enroll in this Program?
This program is designed for English-speaking human resource professionals, personnel directors, union personnel, employee health nurses, safety department personnel, providers of health care service, insurance industry professionals and others interested in health promotion and worksite wellness.    

Program Content
The content is divided into modules. Each module utilizes instructor outlines, audio/video recordings, reading assignments, articles, web resources, case studies to augment the learning process. These methods provide the participant with flexibility in completing assignments and interacting with the faculty.  Each module has accompanying study guide(s) with questions (such as multiple choice, essay) and/or learning activities for participants to submit to faculty.  Interaction with faculty may occur as feedback to study guides, within discussion boards, or via email. The modules cover principles of health risk management, individual/organizational assessment strategies, health promotion program design, program components and activities, motivating behavior change, and evaluating health promotion programs. 

A text is required for this program.  Upon registration, you will receive detailed information to purchase the textbook.

Program Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, the participant will be able to:

  1. Describe the planning process for health education and promotion.
  2. Determine needs for health education/health promotion based on organization and individual and organizational assessment findings.
  3. Design a health promotion program applicable to a worksite or other setting.
  4. Formulate an evaluation plan for health education and health promotion activities.
  5. Discuss the role of finances and key stakeholders in the success of health education and health promotion activities.
  6. Employ techniques to empower individual and communities to improve their health.  
  7. Demonstrate a leadership approach to attain a healthy workplace.
  8. Review key approaches to health promotion to decrease the risk of chronic illness.
  9. Develop strategies to serve as a health education or health promotion advocate.

Delivery of Content
The content is delivered asynchronous via the online learning management system, Blackboard. The internet provides an opportunity for interaction with program faculty while in the comfort of learning in your own home and office.  Program staff are available during business hours by phone or email to assist participants with technical issues or concerns. 

Note: Many businesses, especially government agencies or health institutions, utilize security firewalls.  Access to web links within program and communication from the instructor, or other students may be blocked. We recommend not using your work email address for this course.

Contact Hours
The program is approved for 60 contact hours for nurses.  

This program is designated event for the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) to receive up to 40 CECH hours in health education.

Successful completion of this program does not guarantee expertise in the content. Clinical experience and judgment coupled with an understanding of the content are necessary to attain competency. Achieving certification is a means to demonstrate competency.

Criteria for Successful Completion

  • Submit registration and payment.
  • A certificate for contact hours will be awarded following successful completion of learning activities for each module, receive a passing score of 70% or better on comprehensive final, and submission of program evaluation.

The certificates will be sent via email within approximately 30 days following the completion of the program.
