Description of Program
The Diabetes Certificate Program is an interactive continuing education program designed to provide physicians, registered nurses, advanced practice nurses, pharmacists, physician assistants, and other healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills essential to the health of all diabetic patients. The program consists of six modules and is designed to be completed in six weeks. Each module includes reading assignments, study questions, case studies, and test questions. Learners interact with practitioners and faculty who are expert in the area of Diabetes Management.
Who Should Enroll in this Program
This program is designed for English-speaking nurses, office managers, pharmacists, physicians, and other health care professionals interested in the concepts and practices of Diabetes Management.
Program Curriculum
Instruction will include the following content:
- Pathophysiology of glucose metabolism and diabetes disease state
- Acute Complications
- Chronic Complications
- Oral medications
- Injectible medications
- Diabetes management issues
- Nutrition
- Plan of care involving activity, stress, sick days, and monitoring.
Program Objectives
- Describe pathophysiology, classification, and diagnosis of diabetes mellitus
- Discuss the acute and chronic complications of the patient diagnosed with diabetes mellitus
- Discuss oral pharmacotherapy and insulin therapy
- Describe the non-pharmacological therapies associated with diabetes mellitus, including activity, risk reduction, and problem solving/coping
- Discuss nutrition and other lifestyle behaviors essential to management of diabetes mellitus
- Formulate effective teaching plans for the patient diagnosed with diabetes mellitus
Featuring an "Ask the Expert" Session
National experts will be available to answer your most challenging Diabetes
Management questions.
Course Schedule
This 6 week course is offered two times a year.
Offering dates for 2010: February 15 (registration deadline January 29) and August 16 (registration deadline July 30).

Enrollment Cost
The enrollment fee for this program is $500 and includes Internet instruction, handouts, study guide and a comprehensive exam (the textbook is not included). Partial refunds are available until the start of the class. An additional $50.00 charge will be added for pharmacists requesting contact hours. Continuing education credit will be available to pharmacists beginning with the April 3rd course offerings. NOTE: Pharmacists requesting CEs must request them during registration.
The textbook for this course is Clinical Diabetes: Translating Research into Practice. ISBN 1-4160-0273-1 1st Ed. Elsevie. The textbook is not included in the cost of the program.
Refund Policy
A $25 administrative fee will be charged up to two weeks before the start date.
From two weeks before the class through the day before the start date,
a $75 fee will be charged.
On the start date of the class there will be no refund.

Instruction Methods
A combination of delivery methods are used to facilitate learner and faculty communication including:
Internet
Provides on-line instructor-prepared materials and course assignments. Internet resources are used as an integral part of the instruction.
Computer Conferencing
Allows learners to interact with faculty and other course participants.
Electronic Mail
Allows learners to freely interact on an individual or group level with other learners and faculty.
Telephone Consultation
Faculty will be available by telephone to assist learners.
Computer Requirements and Suggestions
If using a personal computer, it is recommended that the computer have Windows XP or Vista, or Mac OS X or newer. For compatibility, you will want to have access to Microsoft Office 2007, Office 2003 with the Compatibility Pack, or Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac, or Office 2004 for Mac with the latest updates (visit Mactopia Downloads). Additionally, a broadband Internet connection would be very beneficial; AOL is not recommended.
If your computer is more than 5 years old or does not meet the requirements for running one the above versions of Microsoft Office (Windows system requirements / Mac system requirements), you should consider purchasing a new computer.

Delivery of Program Content
The program has six modules. Each module includes reading assignments, study questions, case studies, and test questions. Learners interact with practitioners and faculty who are expert in the area of case management. A comprehensive examination will be administered at the end of the six-week program.
Why Enroll in an Interactive Internet Program?
The convenience of on-line instruction allows the participant to "attend" class at any hour or day of the week during the 6 week period. Participants will learn from experts in the area of diabetes management and have the opportunity to network with other course participants from across the country. Internet instruction provides an opportunity for personal interaction with course faculty while providing the comfort of learning in your own home or office.
Continuing Education Credits
Nurses will receive 48 contact hours.
The University of Southern Indiana College of Nursing and Health Professions, Evansville, is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Indiana State Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.
The Diabetes Management Certificate Program is an ANCC-accredited Nursing Skills Competency Program.
The University of Southern Indiana, College of Nursing and Health Professions is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
The University of Southern Indiana is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing. Provider #13378.
The Indiana Pharmacists Alliance is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. Participants will receive 48 contact hours or 4.8 CEU's for successful completion of this program. CE statements of credit will be distributed upon completion of the program. ACPE # 120-999-09-203-H04-P. Initial Release Date: 01/01/09. Expiration Date: 12/31/11. There is an additional $84.00 charge for pharmacists requesting contact hours. NOTE: Pharmacists requesting CEs must request them during registration. This is a knowledge-based program activity.
