Description of Program
This interactive Internet Certificate Program is a six-week, 48-hour continuing education program for pharmacists, physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals. The program consists of six modules. Each module includes reading assignments, study questions, case studies, and test questions. Learners interact with practitioners and faculty who are experts in the area of lipid management.
Who Should Enroll in this Program
This program is designed for English-speaking pharmacists, physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals who want to enhance or develop the knowledge and skills necessary for quality lipid management.
Purpose and Objectives
The purpose of this continuing education program is to provide an opportunity
for physicians, pharmacists, nurses and other healthcare professionals to increase
their knowledge and expertise in managing lipid-lowering therapy. At the conclusion
of the program the participant
will be able to:
- Identify the functions and sources of cholesterol, identify the functions and sources of triglycerides and describe the five major classes of lipoproteins.
- Identify primary and secondary causes of dyslipidemia.
- List common physical aberrations associated with elevated lipids.
- Identify appropriate tests that contribute to the diagnosis of hyperlipidemia.
- Describe the role of ATP III and the NCEP III guidelines in the management and treatment of patients with high blood cholesterol.
- Explain the principles of pharmacological management of high cholesterol and outline the effect of each agent on atherosclerotic disease, serum lipids, and lipoprotein metabolism.
- Describe the step I and step II diets and other modifications that can be made for some patient subgroups.
- Identify the relationship between a regular exercise behavior and the risk of coronary artery disease, specifically serum lipids.
- Outline the physiologic response to stress and General Adaptation Syndrome.
- Document all phases of the educational process including needs assessment and implementation of the teaching plan.
- Identify the issues that are important for development and support of a lipid management service.

This 6 week course is offered two times a year.

Enrollment Cost
$500
Fee includes Internet instruction, handouts, study guide and a comprehensive exam.
The textbook you need is: Management of Lipids in Clinical Practice (7th edition) Neil J. Stone, MD and Conrad B. Blum, MD. You can order this from Professional Communications, Inc. at 1-800-337-9838. We also recommend A Guide to Developing a Successful Cardiovascular Risk Reduction Program by the Preventive Cardiovascular Nurses Association. This guide is not required for the course but is an excellent resource tool. The textbook is not included in the cost of the program.
There is an additional $50.00 charge for pharmacists requesting contact hours. NOTE: Pharmacists requesting CEs must request them during registration.
Refund Policy
A $25 administrative fee will be charged up to two weeks before
the start date.
From two weeks before the class through the day before the start date, a $75
fee will be charged.
On the start date of the class there will be no refund.

Instruction Methods
A combination of delivery methods are used to facilitate learner and faculty communication including:
Internet
Provides on-line instructor-prepared materials and course assignments. Internet resources are used as an integral part of the instruction.
Computer Conferencing
Allows learners to interact with faculty and other course participants.
Electronic Mail
Allows learners to freely interact on an individual or group level with other learners and faculty.
Telephone Consultation
Faculty will be available by telephone to assist learners.
Equipment Required
Participants will need a computer with Internet access and an e-mail account.
We recommend that you do not use your work e-mail address for taking this course. Many businesses, especially government agencies, utilize security firewalls. Comunication from the instructor, the University, or other students may not get through and you will not see the message. We also do not recommend you use AOL, for similar reasons. AOL accounts include spam prevention-type filters and our communication with you may be filtered-out. We recommend you obtain a separate e-mail account for your course work. Delivery of Program Content
The program has six modules. Each module includes reading assignments, study questions, case studies, and test questions. Learners interact with practitioners and faculty who are expert in the area of lipid management. A comprehensive examination will be administered at the end of the six-week program.
Why Enroll in an Interactive Internet Program?
The convenience of on-line instruction allows the participant to "attend" class at any hour or day of the week during the 6 week period. Participants will learn from experts in the area of lipid management and have the opportunity to network with other course participants from across the country. Internet instruction provides an opportunity for personal interaction with course faculty while providing the comfort of learning in your own home or office.
Continuing Education Credits
A Continuing Education Certificate will be awarded following successful completion of study guide questions, an online comprehensive examination, and submission of a course evaluation. Certificates will be mailed approximately 30 days after the completion of the course.
Nurses will receive 40 hours.
The University of Southern Indiana, College of Nursing and Health Professions is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
The Indiana Pharmacists Alliance is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. Participants will receive 40 contact hours or 4.0 CEU's for successful completion of this program. ACPE # 120-999-09-202-H04-P. Initial Release Date: 01/01/09. Expiration Date: 12/31/11. There is an additional $70.00 charge for pharmacists requesting contact hours. NOTE: Pharmacists requesting CEs must request them during registration. This is a knowledge-based program activity.
