Spring Programs - University of Southern Indiana
March 5-9, 2018
This five-day educational training will follow the 2015 International Association of Forensic Nurses guidelines for Adolescent/Adult Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE). Prior to the in-person training, there are three hours of online education required by each participant.
The SANE training participants will learn the specific protocols in the care and examination of sexual assault victims to preserve evidence and ensure chain of custody, as well as the different aspects of the sexual assault physical examination (history taking, evidence collection, documentation, etc.). In addition, attendees are exposed to members of a Sexual Assault Response Team, and they will participate in a mock trial for a better understanding of legal proceedings.
To sit for the SANE certification exam, a nurse must attend the entire five-day SANE training course, as well as complete clinical requirements outlined by the International Association of Forensic Nurses, which will be discussed during the training. USI program staff will monitor and provide documentation of completion of clinical requirements. Southwest Indiana Area Health Education Center (AHEC) and USI College of Nursing and Health Professions Center for Health Professions Lifelong Learning are collaborating with regional partners to host this training. Instructors include SANE-trained and SANE-certified nurses, Indiana State Police forensic scientists, law enforcement, prosecuting attorneys and victim support specialists.
Recognizing the importance of participation across different agencies, the training will not be limited to nurses. The following are considered potential participants: law enforcement, advocates, prosecutors, health care professionals, students and social workers. Email Jane Friona (firstname.lastname@example.org) with questions about the training.
