The Gabriela, Brian and Michael Wilson Health Informatics and Information Management Scholarship
The Gabriela, Brian and Michael Wilson Health Informatics and Information Management Scholarship Endowment has been established with the University of Southern Indiana Foundation. This scholarship will provide financial assistance to full-time students in the College of Nursing and Health Professions majoring in Health Informatics and Information Management.
Dr. Gabriela Mustata Wilson, chair of Health Informatics and Information Management at USI, and her family established the scholarship to assist students who show a commitment to the health informatics and information management profession through education, work or volunteer and community activities.
“For many of our bright students, education would not be possible without considerable financial support,” said Mustata Wilson. “I still remember how challenging it was for my husband and me to pursue our education in two different countries, having limited financial resources. It was not easy, but through hard work, a good education and support from others, we made it to where we are today. This scholarship endowment is our way of giving back and helping someone else achieve their dreams.”
Mustata Wilson said there is a general lack of awareness about the opportunities and possible career paths in the field of health informatics and information management, especially among women. “This is what fueled the idea of establishing a Health Informatics and Information Management Program at USI,” she said. “We wanted to provide rigorous training to equip our graduates with the requisite skills and abilities to compete for these new and highly specialized jobs in health care.”
The scholarship will be awarded for the first time in the 2018-2019 academic year.
The scholarship is renewable for up to two additional years at the discretion of the selection committee if the recipient continues to meet the eligibility requirements of the scholarship.
