2017 Fall Closing Information

Winter Break: December 13, 2017-January 4, 2018

Housing and Residence Life closes at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, December 13, 2017. Residents who have not received approval to stay late or stay during winter break must leave 24 hours after their last final or by 6 p.m. on December 13, whichever comes first.

WEDNESDAY FINALS
If you have a final on Wednesday, December 13, 2017, that starts at noon or after, you can wait to leave for winter break by noon on Thursday, December 14, 2017. However, you must submit the online stay late request form if you have a final at noon or later on Wednesday, December 13 and want to wait to leave on December 14.

RETURNING STUDENTS
Students who are living in housing in the fall 2017 and are returning for spring 2018, do not need to move their belongings; they only need to leave by 6 p.m. on December 13 and may return on or after January 5, 2018. It is recommended that residents not leave valuables in their apartments or residence halls during winter break. 

IMPORTANT: The USI campus including the Housing and Residence Life office will be closed (December 23, 2017 through January 1, 2018) and there will be limited University staff available.

NOTE: Residents with permanent residences in Vanderburgh, Warrick, Posey, Gibson, Henderson (KY), White (IL), or Gallatin (IL) counties are not eligible to stay after the December 13, 2017, deadline.

Q: Can I stay on campus during winter break?
A: The last day of the fall semester is Wednesday, December 13, 2017, at 6 p.m.  Students wishing to stay any day(s) during the winter break period must pay a $150 fee, sign up by December 8, 2017, and provide a compelling reason for needing to remain in housing during the break period. Please be very specific with your reason for needing to stay during winter break.  Approvals have included requests such as involvement in University sponsored events, international residency, etc. Note that this is merely a request and is subject to approval.  You will be notified via email, telephone or written letter of your request status by a representative of Housing and Residence Life.

Last day to sign up without a $50 fee is December 8, 2017. Students discovered living on campus without authorization may face disciplinary action along with an additional $300 fine.

Q: What if I need to just stay late?
A: The last day of the fall semester is Wednesday, December 13, 2017, at 6 p.m.  Please be very specific in your reason why you need to stay beyond December 13. If you need to stay late due to a Wednesday final, please include the class number, name and time of final scheduled for Wednesday, December 13, 2017. Note that this is merely a request and is subject to approval. 

There is no charge to stay late.  However, if you need to stay after Sunday, December 17, 2017, then you must complete a request to stay during winter break and pay the $150 fee. Students discovered living on campus without authorization may face disciplinary action along with an additional $300 fine.

Q: What if I need to return early for the spring 2018 semester?
A: Early arrival is January 3-4, 2018. Requests should be submitted by Tuesday, January 2, 2018 to . Please note that this is subject to approval by Housing and Residence Life staff. There is no charge to return early.  However, if you need to return prior to January 3, 2018, then you must complete a request to stay during winter break and pay the $150 fee. You will be notified via email, telephone or written letter of your request status by a representative of Housing and Residence Life.  Students discovered living on campus without authorization may face disciplinary action along with an additional $300 fine.

Q: What do I need to know about winter break?
A: RAs will be conducting room inspections to ensure all residents have left housing. Students who are discovered living on campus without authorization may face disciplinary action along with an additional $300 fine.

USI maintenance staff will be conducting room inspections during winter break checking thermostats, weather radios and fire extinguishers. Room inspections will take place December 14-22 and January 2-5. Any resident violating a Housing and Residence Life and Food Service contract policy could have their extension immediately revoked and face disciplinary procedures.

Q: Do returning residents need to do anything?
A: All residents must do the following prior to December 13, 2017:

  • Clean their apartment/suite thoroughly
  • Unplug all electrical appliances, except for stoves, dishwashers, and University-provided refrigerators
  • Remove any belongings from a vacant spot in the apartment/suite so that new residents can move in for the spring semester
  • Turn heater to LOW
  • Remove all perishable food items from cabinets and refrigerators

Q: What if I'm not returning to housing for spring 2018?
A: Residents not returning to housing in the spring must complete a contract cancellation form.  In addition, students must check out of Housing by 6 p.m. on December 13, 2017. Check out extensions will be considered for any student who provides a compelling reason  for a late check out.

The following procedures must be followed to avoid the $200 improper check out charge:

  • Remove all your belongings (including trash)
  • Sweep and mop/vacuum all floors.
  • Dust all counters and drawers.
  • Clean and sanitize the kitchen, bathrooms, refrigerator, and stove.
  • Clean bathroom, tub, toilet, sink, and mirrors.
  • Discard any large and/or heavy items such as lumber, bricks, or carpeting in the trash dumpsters outside the buildings.
  • Check out with your RA.  If you cannot find your RA, return your key to the Housing and Residence Life office.

Failure to properly check out will result in an improper check out charge of $200. This charge is in addition to any damage charges, losses, cleaning charges, or room/board assessment. Failure to return your key will result in an improper check out charge, as well as a $60 lock change fee. Back to top
