Process Terms

Assistant Director of Student Conduct and Outreach
A staff member who oversees the student conduct process for the Housing and Residence Life community. The assistant director is a member of the Dean of Students office.

Incident Report
Documentation that is written by a member of the USI community (staff or student) of an alleged situation that has occurred in the campus community.

Notice of Infraction and Administrative Hearing
Correspondence that is sent to any student who may have been involved with an incident that has occurred in the USI community (housing and non-housing); at this point, no outcome has been reached and the student has not been found responsible or not responsible for the charges in question.

Notice of Infraction and Informal Resolution
Correspondence that is sent to any student who may have been involved with an on-campus incident and a description of what outcome has been reached.

Hearing Officer
The staff member who will hear a student conduct case; a hearing officer will most likely be the Area Coordinator or Assistant Director of Student Conduct and Outreach.

Administrative Hearing
A meeting with a hearing officer where the alleged student has the opportunity to share his/her perspective on the incident in question.

Administrative Hearing Record
Correspondence, explaining the outcome of a student conduct hearing, that is sent to any student who has met with a hearing officer or has been notified and a hearing has taken place in absentia; a student can be found responsible or not responsible for the incident in question and a sanction may be assigned.

Conflict Resolution
A meeting with an HRL representative that may or may not include others involved in which student(s) can share their perspectives on the conflict and receive mediation.

Sanctions
Educational and/or restorative activities that are assigned to students who have been found responsible for an involvement in an incident. See sanction chart for more information.

Conduct Hold
Students may receive a HOLD on their student account, due to one of the following situations:

  1. Missed a scheduled meeting with a hearing officer
  2. Failed to complete a sanction assigned by a hearing officer

Students who have questions about a conduct hold should contact the hearing officer or the Assistant Director of Student Conduct and Outreach.
