Resident Assistant

Housing and Residence Life is searching for residents assistants for the 2016-17 academic year. 

The Resident Assistant position is a unique leadership opportunity that allows students to contribute to the academic, social, personal and cultural growth of the residential
community at the University of Southern Indiana. Resident Assistants create a residential experience through community development and peer mentorship and support those roles through administration, crisis response, and being a team member. Resident Assistants are responsible for establishing and maintaining an atmosphere that supports philosophy, core values, mission and policies of Housing and Residence Life.

The five basic roles of the resident assistant are as follows: 

Community Developer
Peer Mentor
Crisis Responder
Team Member

Resident Assistant Duties

  • Available (up to two weeks before classes start and five days after classes end)
  • Assist with check in and closing
  • RAs must be available from 3:30 p.m.-5 p.m. every Thursday
  • Participate in a weekly on-call rotation
  • Attend RA training at the beginning of each semester
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Be a role model for residents and campus community
  • Document incidents that occur
  • Work weekly desk shifts
  • Create community through programmatic and relationship building

Application Requirements

  • Must have a 2.5 (3.5 graduate) cumulative GPA to apply
  • Must maintain a 2.5 (3.5 graduate) semester and cumulative GPA if selected
  • Must enroll full-time (12 credit hours undergraduate, 9 hours graduate) but may take no more than 18 hours in a given semester without prior approval from HRL
  • May enroll in only one class beginning at or after 6 p.m.
  • You must be in good standing with USI (academic and disciplinary)
  • Candidates must be available for formal and group interview between
    November 2-6 (for those wanting to be considered for spring 2016 hire) or
    February 12-14 (for those who only wish to be considered for fall 2016 hire)
