Indiana's Historic Pathways Teacher Workshop
Getting from Here to There: The Story of Southern Indiana's Transportation Routes

October 1, 2013
Lawrence County Museum of History, Bedford, Indiana

Historic Southern Indiana and Indiana's Historic Pathways will host a workshop for teachers on October 1, 2013 at the Lawrence County Museum of History, 929 15th Street, Bedford, Indiana. The workshop, "Getting from Here to There: The Story of Southern Indiana's Transportation Routes," will offer teachers innovative ways to tell the story of community, early settlement, and westward migration using Indiana's teaching standards. The workshop is geared toward 3rd and 4th grade teachers, but anyone is welcome to attend. This year's topics include Native Americans, military forts, one room schools, and roads and bridges. A panel session will highlight classroom project ideas from current teachers.

Indiana's Historic Pathways is a National Scenic Byway that joined the America's Byways collection in October 2009. The byway, which encompasses US 50 and US 150, focuses on the history of transportation and settlement in southern Indiana from primitive pathways to the modern highway system. It begins with a pre-historic trail created by bison on their annual migration from the salt licks in Kentucky to the prairies of Illinois. Native Americans later used these pathways on hunting expeditions. Early settlers to southern Indiana used them to travel in the heavily wooded interior. Later the pathway became a stagecoach route and eventually US 150. The railroad between Cincinnati and St. Louis cuts across southern Indiana and US 50 would eventually run parallel. For more information on the byway, visit IndianasHistoricPathways.org

The cost to attend is $20 and includes lunch and teaching materials. Attendees will receive a box of items representing the history of communities along the byway to use in hands on lessons with their students. A limited number of substitute teacher stipends will be available to offset the cost of attending.
