West Baden Springs receives first Community Legacy Award

The town of West Baden Springs received Historic Southern Indiana's first annual Community Legacy Award in May in recognition of excellence in historic preservation, zoning and planning, downtown revitalization, heritage tourism, and hospitality training.

West Baden Springs resident Katy Ross nominated the town citing the town's 1999 charette (design workshop) that created a community-supported vision for the future. The design workshop came out of the Your Town design workshop that HSI conducted in 1998. The town also is known for its preservation accomplishments. Although the former West Baden Springs Hotel is the most famous, renovation also is taking place on the former Homestead Hotel, which is being developed into senior housing units, and the West Baden Baptist Church. All three properties are on the National Register of Historic Places.

As the Community Legacy Award recipient, West Baden Springs received an engraved plaque for public display and a check for $1,000 to be reinvested into the community. These were presented to West Baden Springs Clerk-Treasurer Cathy Carnes and Katy Ross at a public ceremony at the West Baden Springs Dome.
