My teaching interests reflect my research interests--the peopling of the nation, especially the lower Midwest and the upper South; the religious and cultural values of those peoples; the development of towns and villages in that region; and the impact of wars on the people and the landscape.

The photo below was taken a few years ago in Lincoln Park, east of the US Capitol in Washington. The sculpture was one of the first of Lincoln after the Civil War. It was paid for by former slaves. Frederick Douglass spoke at its unveiling in 1876. Some controversy exists over whether the slave, being manumitted, is kneeling or rising. Recent scholars have argued he is rising.
