Historic Southern Indiana presents
The 1st Annual Lincoln Institute for Teachers
July 8-9, 2004

This will be the first in a series of annual programs focusing on Lincoln as the bicentennial of his birth approaches in 2009.  Teachers from all grade levels and disciplines are invited to attend.

Matthew Pinsker, professor of history at Dickinson College and author of Lincoln's Sanctuary: Abraham Lincoln and the Soldier's Home will conduct the keynote address.  This session will explore how people learn about Lincoln and will include discussion on his book.  James Percoco, a master teacher from West Springfield High School in Springfield, Virginia will discuss ways he has incorporated Lincoln into his teaching and will also talk about a summer research project that has taken him around the country.  Martha Beckort, media specialist with the Lanesville Community School Corporation will introduce teachers to online and print sources and curricular materials on Abraham Lincoln.  Teachers will have the opportunity to discuss incorporating Lincoln into the teaching standards, teaching Lincoln in different disciplines, and the potential for interdisciplinary work.

Other institute activities include a tour of Lincoln-related sites including Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial, Lincoln State Park, and the Colonel William Jones House and a performance of Young Abe Lincoln outdoor musical drama.

Speaker Biographies

Matthew Pinsker is the Endowed Chair of American Civil War History at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.  He writes frequently about Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War.  In addition to his newest book, Lincoln’s Sanctuary:  Abraham Lincoln and the Soldiers’ Home, he has authored Abraham Lincoln:  American President Reference Series.  He also serves as a senior partner in Jack Burden & Associates, a consulting firm that specializes in politics, public policy, and public history.

James Percoco teaches history at West Springfield High School in Springfield, Virginia.  The recipient of numerous education awards, Percoco was selected for the first USA Today All-Star Teacher Team in 1998 and named Outstanding Social Studies Teacher of the Year at the 1993 Walt Disney Company American Teacher Awards.  He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the National Council for History Education and has been an educational consultant to the National Archives, the National Gallery of Art, the National Park Service, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund.  Percoco’s first book, A Passion for the Past:  Creative Teaching of U.S. History (Heinemann, 1998), received the 2000 James Harvey Robinson Prize from The American Historical Association.

Martha Beckort serves as the media specialist and distance learning coordinator for the Lanesville Community School Corporation in Lanesville, Indiana and has prior teaching experience in the classroom.  She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in secondary education–social studies from the University of Southern Indiana.  She also has a Masters of Science degree in education from Purdue and a Masters of Library Science from Indiana University.  She serves in the American Library Association, the American School Librarian Association, the Association of Indiana Media Specialists, and the International Reading Association.

Field Session Sites

Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial preserves the site where Abraham Lincoln lived from the ages of 7 to 21.  The park includes the Memorial Visitor Center with a museum and an orientation film about Lincoln’s years in Indiana.  The park also includes the gravesite of Lincoln's  mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln, and the Lincoln Living Historical Farm where 19th century pioneer life is interpreted.

Lincoln State Park includes the Little Pigeon Creek Baptist Church and the gravesite of Sarah Lincoln Grigsby, Lincoln’s sister.

The Colonel William Jones House is the 1830s home of Jones, a merchant, politician, legislator, Civil War colonel, and former neighbor of the Lincolns.

Young Abe Lincoln Outdoor Musical Drama This Billy Edd Wheeler musical explores Lincoln’s boyhood years.  Experience his encounter with river pirates on an adventure to Mississippi and see the first glimpses of the homespun humor that made him such a great orator.

Institute Information

Graduate Credit: Workshop participants may receive one hour of graduate credit by attending the Lincoln Institute and completing additional coursework.  Participants would pay the regular registration fee and the appropriate graduate tuition and fees for summer 2004.  For more information, call Leslie Townsend at 812-465-7013.

Overnight Accommodations: Workshop participants needing overnight accommodations will stay in University Housing.  The rates are $24.00 a night for double occupancy and $36.00 for single occupancy. This includes a linen service of sheets, pillowcase, and towels.  Registrants will need to bring their own pillow and blanket.

Registration deadline is June 23.  Due to the nature of this workshop, space is limited.
