Community Legacy Award

Madison receives 2001 Community Legacy Award

Historic Southern Indiana presented the town of Madison with the second annual Community Legacy Award in a public ceremony held May 18 at the town's City Hall. Mayor Al Huntington and Betsy Vonderheide, special projects administrator for the city, accepted the award.

Madison, one of the oldest cities in the state founded in 1809, received a $1,000 cash award to support heritage-related projects and a plaque of achievement for public display.

The city was recognized as a living museum to the early life of the Southern Indiana region. The entire downtown is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The city also has two national landmarks, the Windle-Shrewsberry House and the Lanier Mansion.

The current Main Street preservation project has been active since 1992 and boasts the encouragement of millions of dollars of investment and improvement in the downtown business district.

Other initiatives recognized by the award are the Rental Rehab project, allowing building owners to provide the match for HUD grants to renovate buildings for residential use; the Riverfront Project; and the Historic Board of Review; and the Mayor's Task Force on Tourism.
