Awards:
Three southern Indiana attractions and a site interpreter at Culbertson Mansion received top awards in Historic Southern Indiana's Awards for Excellence in Interpretation Program.
Angel Mounds State Historic Site received the Best Information Media for the exhibit, "The World from Turtle Mother's Back." The multicultural exhibit examined how mankind holds traditions and beliefs of ancestors in a diverse world. Visitors were encouraged to explore the idea that with the passing generations it becomes more clear that Indiana has a distinctive cultural and natural heritage which continues to enrich and enliven its special slice of the world. The honor included at $200.00 cash award.
The 1997 Candlelight Tours of Historic New Harmony received the Best Interpretive Program with a $250.00 cash award. Historic sites were decorated in a style befitting the early 1800s while period music was performed. The Vincennes State Historic Site received the Best Overall Interpretive Services of 1997 and a $500.00 cash award. Special events, an aggressive outreach program, and strong involvement in the community led Vincennes State Historic Site to receive the award.
Judi Foreman, an interpreter at the Culbertson Mansion State Historic Site in New Albany, Indiana, was awarded Outstanding Interpreter of the Year. She was responsible for organizing, writing, and producing a Culbertson Mansion murder mystery that gave two-sold out performances. The award included a vacation package to the southern Indiana attraction of her choice.
Over fifteen entries participated in the competition now in its seventh year. The winners were selected by a committee of Historic Southern Indiana, a University of Southern Indiana project that promotes the historical, natural, and recreational attractions of southern Indiana.
