2nd Annual Lincoln Institute for
Teachers
A workshop for K-12 Teachers
Evansville, Indiana
June 16-17, 2005
Introduction
This is the second in a series of annual programs focusing on Lincoln as the bicentennial of his birth approaches in 2009. This year’s institute will focus on Lincoln, race, and the Underground Railroad. Teachers from all grade levels and disciplines are invited to attend.
Richard Blackett, the Andrew Jackson professor of history at Vanderbilt University, will conduct the keynote address. He will discuss learning about race in the 1850s Ohio Valley. Blackett also will conduct a public lecture on the evening of June 16 where he will talk about Lincoln and race. Keith Griffler, professor of African American studies at the University of Cincinnati, will discuss myths, legends, and facts about the Underground Railroad. Barbara Tagger, southeast region coordinator of the National Park Service’s National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Program will provide information on that program and its mission. Two presenters from last year’s institute will be returning. James Percoco, master teacher at West Springfield High School in Springfield, Virginia will discuss teaching about race in the classroom and Martha Beckort, media specialist at Lanesville Community School Corporation, will review online and print teaching resources related to the institute’s topic.
