Introduction
Historic Southern Indiana is pleased to once again offer the Guide to Historic
Sites in Southern Indiana. Created by the Education Committee, the Guide was
first published in 1991 in response to a need expressed by educators and site
administrators. It is designed to assist teachers, educational agencies, and any
other group wishing to visit historic sites and museums in this region.
Likewise, the Guide may be used by local and state tourism officials and
community development agencies by providing information on sites and the
services provided. It is revised biannually.
The Guide is arranged in alphabetical order by city or town. Sites are then
listed in alphabetical order under the city. Information is provided on services
available, operating period and hours, fees, materials available for educational
groups, and how to contact the site.
Groups planning to visit should make reservations well in advance, keeping in
mind that the period from April through October is the busiest for area sites.
Group leaders may want to consider visiting sites in the less crowded winter
season. Area site administrators also would like to remind groups that their
sites can be utilized in a variety of ways aside from the standard tour. Sites
can often provide videotapes, films, literature, lesson plans for teacher,
self-guided activities, and other services.
Updated information,
changes or additions to the material should be directed to the Historic Southern
Indiana office for updating web site and publication in the next edition.
