The Lewis and Clark
Bicentennial:
Teaching across the Curriculum
Jeffersonville, Indiana
June 17, 2003
Introduction
As the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark expedition draws near, interest in the Corps of Discovery grows. Lewis and Clark have had a great impact on the history of our country, among other reasons for their extraordinary contributions in geography and science. Join Historic Southern Indiana for an informative day of learning as participants learn about Lewis and Clark and how to incorporate Lewis and Clark material into the curriculum. Indiana and Kentucky teachers for all grade levels and disciplines are invited to attend.
Peter Onuf, professor of history at the University of Virginia and a distinguished biographer of Thomas Jefferson, will lead the day with a keynote address on "Jefferson, Lewis and Clark, and the West." He also will discuss teaching this era in American and world history. Martha Beckort of the Lanesville Community School Corporation will introduce teachers to online and print sources and curricular material on Lewis and Clark and the West. The afternoon will be spent discussing the new teaching standards, teaching Lewis and Clark in different disciplines, and the potential for interdisciplinary work. Teachers will have the opportunity to work on strategies for classroom materials and projects.
Historic Southern Indiana sponsors this event, in cooperation with Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana. Grant support from the Indiana Humanities Council helped to make this event possible.
Historic Southern Indiana is an outreach program of the University of Southern Indiana.
