A workshop for K-12 Teachers

Evansville, Indiana
July 8-9, 2004

Introduction

This will be the first in a series of annual programs focusing on Lincoln as the bicentennial of his birth approaches in 2009.  Teachers from all grade levels and disciplines are invited to attend.

Matthew Pinsker, professor of history at Dickinson College and author of Lincoln's Sanctuary: Abraham Lincoln and the Soldier's Home will conduct the keynote address.  This session will explore how people learn about Lincoln and will include discussion on his book.  James Percoco, a master teacher from West Springfield High School in Springfield, Virginia will discuss ways he has incorporated Lincoln into his teaching and will also talk about a summer research project that has taken him around the country.  Martha Beckort, media specialist with the Lanesville Community School Corporation will introduce teachers to online and print sources and curricular materials on Abraham Lincoln.  Teachers will have the opportunity to discuss incorporating Lincoln into the teaching standards, teaching Lincoln in different disciplines, and the potential for interdisciplinary work.

Other institute activities include a tour of Lincoln-related sites including Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial, Lincoln State Park, and the Colonel William Jones House and a performance of Young Abe Lincoln outdoor musical drama.
