Angel Mounds is a 103 acre Mississippian village site which was occupied ca. A.D. 900-1450. It was the religious, cultural, social and economic center for the area. Between 1000 and 3000 people lived in the village. They built eleven earthen mounds with important buildings, such as the temple of chief's residence on top. They also built a stockade wall around the village. It is not known why the residents left the site.
