New Harmony was the site of two early American utopian communities, the first a German religious group known as the Harmonists, the second led by social reformer Robert Owen. Historic New Harmony preserves and interprets several structures important ot the Harmonist decade, the Owen period, and the Victorian Era. Tours begin at the internationally acclaimed Atheneum, designed by architect Richard Meier, and continue through log cabins and furnished homes of the Harmonist, Owen, and Victorian eras. Special exhibits include the Maximilian-Bodmer Collection, a set of original prints of life among the Mandan Indians in the 1830s and various displays of natural history, education, and early crafts in New Harmony.
