International Students

Health Matters

USI Mandatory Health Insurance

All international students (F-1 or J-1 visa holders and J-1 dependents) must have adequate health insurance while enrolled at the University of Southern Indiana. The University health insurance program offers comprehensive coverage designed for international students. You will be billed $1,280 for the cost of this program at the beginning of the academic year, for coverage from August 2014 to August 2015. Exchange students and other students who will enroll for one semester only can purchase coverage for that period of time ($427 for fall or spring semester).

The USI health insurance coverage may be waived if you already have adequate health insurance. You must provide an insurance certificate or other documentation in English, showing that your health insurance meets the minimum requirements. Please contact Linda Lefler in International Programs (465-1248) for questions in this regard.

Minimum coverage must provide:

  • Medical benefits of at least $50,000 per accident or illness
  • Repatriation of remains in the amount of $25,000
  • Expenses associated with medical evacuation to student's home country in the amount of $25,000
  • A deductible (the amount you pay) not to exceed $500 per accident or illness
  • Coverage for entire academic year
  • An insurance corporation having an A.M. Best rating of “A-” or above, or the endorsement of the student’s government must underwrite the insurance policy.

USI Health Center

The USI Student Health Center, located in the lower level of the Health Professions Building, Room 0091, provides many services, including:

  • Acute, minor care
  • Women’s health
  • Administration of immunizations/injections
  • Flu and allergy shots
  • Pregnancy tests
  • Laboratory testing
  • Physicals
  • Prescriptions
  • Diagnosis and treatment of Sexually-Transmitted Diseases
  • Medical procedures performed in the office

The Student Health Center is open:

Monday - Friday

8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Call 465-1250 for information concerning after-hours services. It is always a good idea to call for an appointment before you go to the Health Center, but it's not necessary.

USI Dental Clinic

Dental Hygiene treatment and radiographs are provided by students of the USI Dental Hygiene Program. The clinic is open to all members of the public. Services are provided at a low cost. Call 812-464-1706 for appointment days and times, and other information.

Finding a Doctor and a Hospital in your Network

There are two hospitals in Evansville: St. Mary’s and Deaconess. It is important to check with your insurance to see which hospital and which doctors are in your network. If you go to a doctor who is not in your network, you may have to pay a substantial portion of the bill before your health insurance covers the remaining portion. Please ask Linda Lefler or 465-1248 in the CIP Office if you have any questions regarding health insurance.

If you have Lewer Insurance, you are in the Deaconess network. The health clinic on campus is part of Deaconess Hospital.

If you have Lewer insurance, this link will help you find a doctor in the Lewer network:

Visiting the Emergency Room

Most insurance companies will charge you more if you go to the hospital emergency room and your problem was not considered an emergency or you were not admitted to the hospital. These are all valid reasons to go to the Emergency Room:

  • Loss of consciousness
  • Intolerable and uncontrollable pain
  • Severe shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Uncontrollable bleeding
  • Poisoning
(Note: If possible, call your poison control center first and ask for immediate home-treatment advice)
  • A major injury, such as head injury
  • Severe or worsening reaction to an insect bite or sting, or a medication, especially if breathing is difficult

Problems that Do Not Require a Visit to the Emergency Room

  • Earache
  • Minor laceration (cut) where bleeding is controlled
  • Minor dog bite where bleeding is controlled
  • Possible broken bone (if bone is showing or if limb is deformed go directly to the Emergency Room)
  • Possible strain
  • A blistered sunburn, or minor blistered cooking burn
  • Bee or insect sting, or delayed swelling (if there is breathing difficulty go directly to the Emergency Room)
  • Rash
  • Fever (if there is a convulsion, go directly to the Emergency Room)
  • Sexually transmitted disease (STD)
  • Colds or cough, sore throat or flu
