Submarines & the Modern Culture

Course description:
Students will learn the impact of submarines on history, literature,
non-fiction, film arts, military science, and global politics by analyzing the
role of diesel subs during two world wars and nuclear subs during the cold war
and the modern era. Prerequisite: second semester senior standing or
approval of LIBA coordinator.
Goals and Objectives: To make
students aware of the vast wealth of knowledge about submarines and examine the
many ways that subs have had an impact on American and world cultures. This will
be done by focusing on literary, scientific, ethical, political, military and
other approaches to studying submersibles.

Grades
from this course will be given for the following:

Mid-term examination: 20 percent of course grade
·
Book analyzes: 20 percent
·
Movie analyses: 20 percent
·
Two reaction papers: 10 percent of course grade
·
Final exam: 30 percent of course grade
·

Class Activities during the semester.
Students will:
·
Read five books and write literary analyses for each
·
Watch and be tested over the content of nine streaming videos
·
Watch and analyze six movies and/or film documentaries
·
Write two short reactions papers on designated topics.
·
Use the USI library for books and films
Deadlines are important. Since
your assignments will be submitted electronically, they will be time-dated. You
can always turn an assignment in early, but to submit one late will
result in a reduced or zero grade – at the professor’s discretion.
Scoring: 100-90 = A 89-80 =
B 79-70 = C 69-60 = D 59-00 = F
Make-up assignments and exams are
allowed only at the discretion of the professor. No make-up tests will be given
unless the professor is notified (telephone, FAX or eMail) in advance
that you will miss a deadline or a test. Personal sickness, death in one's
immediate family, and institutional excuses are the only reasons for such
extensions. Limit of one make-up per student. No extra credit projects will be
allowed.
Major examinations
and final will be short essay in format, and will be taken online on specified dates.
Course communication: It is the
students’ responsibility to check their e-mail on Wednesdays and Fridays for
special messages from the instructor relating to the class. Fail to do so and
you may miss an assignment or special activity.

Students with documented disabilities
