Michael Aakhus has been Professor of printmaking and painting at the University of Southern Indiana since 1977. He was born in Minnesota on the Canadian border and attended Bemidji State University where he earned a BA in Art and Art History. On completion of his undergraduate work he moved to Edwardsville Illinois across the Mississippi from St. Louis where he received a Master of Fine Arts in printmaking, painting and drawing from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. He received a grant to continue his research and moved to New Mexico to spend a year painting and making prints with the Roswell Museum and Art Center.
His work has been exhibited widely and is represented in many public and private collections throughout the United States as well and other countries. His current work is based on images from travels in Latin Americas and touch on themes related to the indigenous cultures.
