USI students are able to include professional Actors Equity Association productions on their resumes even before graduating from USI — a distinction which puts the USI Department of Performing Arts in league with some of the country’s elite theatre programs.
Since 2007, the University of Southern Indiana’s Theatre Program and The New Harmony Theatre (USI’s professional summer company) have joined together to create a spring or fall season for New Harmony. This joint project creates unparalleled opportunities for students within USI’s Department of Performing Arts (DPA).
USI and New Harmony Theatres co-produce two plays in rotating repertory with professional actors working along side junior and senior performance students. Students support these productions artistically and technically under the direction of NHT Artistic Director Lenny Leibowitz and Department Chair Elliot Wasserman. USI Performing Arts faculty participate artistically in the productions, including professional artist/educators Shan Jensen, Craig A. Young, Robert Broadfoot and Thomas N. Thompson.
The Repertory Project is a two-play season performed on the USI stage at the Mallette Theatre in Evansville. The Project brings members of the Actors Equity Association, the professional union of stage actors and stage managers, to work with USI students of acting and stage management. Undergraduates are able to work with accomplished professionals and gain valuable points toward qualifying to join this exclusive and prestigious union.
