Objectives
Cognitive Science is the interdisciplinary science of the human mind and cognition which includes study of neuroscience, perception, learning, robotics/artificial intelligence, linguistics, and neural networks. The 18-hour minor in cognitive science is designed as a supplement for majors in psychology, philosophy, computer science, mathematics, engineering/technology, and languages, though it is applicable beyond these disciplines as well.
The Cognitive Science Minor prepares
students for:
Training in cognitive science prepares students well for many of the careers that are major growth fields of the twenty-first century, including: psychology, information processing, medical analysis, data retrieval, human-computer interaction, telecommunications, and education.
Required courses ~ 18 hours
Select one course from each of the following course groupings:
- PHIL 205-Introduction to Logic, 3 hrs.
- PHIL 305-Introduction to Symbolic Logic, 3 hrs.
- MATH 253-Principles of Mathematical Logic, 3 hrs.
- PSY 385-Physiological Psychology, 3 hrs.
- PSY 425-Cognitive Psychology, 3 hrs.
- PHIL 377-Introduction to Cognitive Science, 3 hrs.
- PHIL 425-Philosophy of Mind, 3 hrs.
- PHIL 361-Special Problems (an appropriate topic), 3 hrs. (requires the cognitive science advisor’s approval)
- PHIL 362-Interdisciplinary Problems (an appropriate topic), 3 hrs. (requires the cognitive science advisor’s approval)
- PSY 400-Special Topics: Psycholinguistics, 3 hrs.
- ENG 313-Introduction to Linguistics, 3 hrs.
- FREN 265-Introduction to Applied Linguistics, 3 hrs.
- GERM 265-Introduction to Applied Linguistics, 3 hrs.
- SPAN 265-Introduction to Applied Linguistics, 3 hrs.
- One additional course from any of the above groupings, 3 hrs.
- ENGR 241-Digital Logic Design, 3 hrs.
- CS 101-Fundamentals of Computer Science, 3 hrs.
- CS 461-Artificial Intelligence, 3 hrs.
- PSY 400-Special Topics (an appropriate topic), 3 hrs. (requires the cognitive science advisor’s approval)
