Professor Emeritus of JournalismDal M. Herring is professor emeritus of journalism, periodically teaching online courses. He helped pioneer USI's distance education curricula and is an alumnus of the East-West Center’s Asian Studies program at the University of Hawaii-Manoa. He earned his doctorate at Texas A&M University in educational public relations, his master's degree in American literature from Sul Ross State University, and his bachelor of arts degree in journalism from Texas A&M. Dr. Herring has taught at three different universities, a community college, and in the public schools. He has served as faculty advisor for campus newspapers and broadcast stations, and worked professionally in the print media. For more than 20 years he has been an advocate of First Amendment free expression by doing public speaking, writing and disseminating of literature, and working with free-press groups. He has won awards from the Society of Professional Journalists for this work on behalf of freedom of information. He served as chair of the Communications Department for 16 years from 1990-2006. After retiring in 2006, he has continued to teach online adjunct courses.
