This major prepares students for the world of news reporting, writing, new media publishing, and document design. Students learn the skills of the Information Age in labs equipped with modern electronic hardware and software that are linked to the Internet. Graduates succeed in any field where writing and a command of the language are needed.  The Journalism Major has two emphases: Print and Online.

Students who are not proficient in computer design skills should take COMM 190 Computer Basics (1 hr) prior to enrolling in laboratory courses such as JRN 281.

Note: Student may count no more than three hours from JRN 180, 400, or 498 as directed electives.

The news, advertising, public relations, and broadcasting industries are expanding the use of the Internet and new media. To create and maintain their Internet sites, most companies now hire individuals or Web design agencies. Graduates with these skills are some of the most sought after employees in the corporate world today.

Journalism Teacher Certification Minor Download Checksheet for a Teacher Certification Minor in Journalism

NOTE: Please review the College of Liberal Arts Teacher Certification Policy. In addition to a teaching minor in journalism, in order to teach journalism in Indiana secondary schools, a student must have a teaching major in English – or a teaching major in another discipline with a teaching minor in English.
