The Shield is a weekly, student-published newspaper distributed on campus every Thursday during the fall and spring semesters.
The Shield can also be found online at www.usishield.com, where students publish additional stories, photos and multimedia elements produced in conjunction with our media partners, Access USI and 820 The Edge.
Student reporters and photographers cover campus news and sports, review music and movies, profile USI personalities, and write opinions on current events. Students also layout the newspaper, manage the Web site, and sell and design advertising.
Students of all majors are invited to contribute to The Shield.
“The student newspaper allows students to draw attention to the issues that affect them,” said Erin Gibson, The Shield’s advisor. “We need students of all ages and from all academic fields to bring those issues to the table. A variety of voices allows the newspaper to cover the full extent of our university.”
Gibson is also the publication’s fiscal officer and a member of the journalism faculty.
“USI students learn journalism by being journalists. They develop story ideas, make the calls, do the interviews, and write the stories. It’s fantastic because they are gaining experience and building a portfolio to prepare them for their first jobs.”
In 2005, President H. Ray Hoops signed a statement designating The Shield a public forum, which guarantees the editorial independence of USI’s campus media.
The Shield is governed by the USI Student Publications Committee, a panel of students, administrators, and faculty.
The Shield office is located in a 1,900 square foot office suite in UC East 0227, which is the lower level of the University Center East.
The Shield is a member of the Associated Collegiate Press, College Newspaper Business and Advertising Managers, the Indiana Collegiate Press Association, and the Hoosier State Press Foundation.
